In the mood for some learning? Then you should make your SPOT below for this challenge.

1 point for any documentary.

2 points for a documentary about dark subject matter.

3 points for a documentary about the horror genre.

1 bonus point for an FTV.

DVD and Blu-ray commentaries are allowed and fall under the same rules, but no FTV point.

This year, we're going to try one small change. If you want to watch a documentary that's less than 40 minutes, you can, but you only receive half the points.

Mockumentaries are also allowed, but they must be feature length.

The Documentary Challenge will begin with June and end with June.

If you need some ideas for what to watch, here's last year's progress thread https://trashepics.com/post/9/197/.

I watched a few episodes of "What We Do in the Shadows" last night, and while it was actually pretty funny, I do understand your grievance. I wasn't even aware that mockumentaries were allowed in previous challenges (shows how much I pay attention, huh? emoticon), but the thing is that these types of "mockumentaries" are more narratively driven with the occasional aside, to the point where they hardly resemble an actual documentary.

If it's a deal breaker for some people, ballz can call a vote as to whether to continue allowing them. Or as der says, disallow non feature length mockumentaries to even things out a bit. I don't care either way, as I should probably focus on some actual docs.

Ya if it's wanted I'll remove those. I think it wasn't an issue last year because there wasn't the under 40 minute rule. That rule opens up a lot of questionable shows.

Rule change: mockumentaries are no longer allowed unless they're feature length. If you've already watched some that don't qualify, you may keep them, but don't watch anymore for this challenge. Pretty sure this isn't going to change anyone's mind about participating if they aren't already, but you can't make everyone happy...

I'll remove them from mine, honestly they really ran up my score in just 2 and a half hours

Up to you. Just don't delete your spot. We've had enough deletions for one challenge.

Sometimes the best way to figure out this kind of stuff is trial and error. Next time, including mockumentaries at all can be taken into consideration. Or maybe nothing episodic, which would still allow short documentaries from DVDs or whatever.

But as you said, objections should've been voiced before the start of the challenge...

They really should have been voiced before the start, no one would have minded then. It would have been best for all. I hope Markus will decide to take part in the challenge - something tells me he won't thou even with the changes...

So... Deadly secrets is not considered a documentary on IMDB and it really isn't, this is a reenactment show and has big name actors like Gucci Mane's son. Nothing is really documented, it's dramatized which is kind of the opposite of a documentary.

It is more of a documentary than mockumentary. Because this content really happened.

It's neither. It's a dramatized crime drama, with actors and recreations. IMDB doesn't even include documentary on the genre section for it. Lots of things really happened, that doesn't make them documentaries, it makes them based on a true story.

I watched this too, and it is a documentary. It has the real people on there talking about the murder, actual crime scene footage, and the officers who weee in charge of the case documenting how the investigation unfolded. It is a documentary. Yes there is some dramatization, but itโ€™s very minimal, and most of the show is the real people talking, and real life footage. But letโ€™s be real, all murder documentaries are dramatized. Itโ€™s doesnt make it and less of a documentary.

The definition of a so documentary is for media: A movie, television, or radio program that provides a factual report. This show does exactly that, therefore it is a documentary.

And as for IMDb we all know they donโ€™t include every genre it is. But for the purposes of this challenge deadly secrets is a documentary.

documentary[ dok-yuh-men-tuh-ree, -tree ]
Movies, Television. based on or re-creating an actual event, era, life story, etc., that purports to be factually accurate and contains no fictional elements:

Okay. I took this definition from dictionary.com: going by this definiton deadly secrets would count. The dramatization recreates the events, and has nothing fictional elements.

Dramatization does NOT automatically make something a documentary. As I already told you in PM, I'll allow Deadly Secrets, but it's because you claim it features real footage and people who were involved, not because it's a dramatization.

Now all of you stop stirring up drama in my challenge.

By your own definition the show in question is not a documentary. The dramatization itself is a fictional element. Compare the Ted Bundy Tapes to the new Zac Efron film. Efron did a great job presenting his interpretation of Bundy, but it was still just acting. Even if the film hadn't taken any creative liberties and had stuck to the facts it still would not be a documentary. For example, much of the real life footage of Bundy can be used to analyze how his body language indicates deception or guilt. Dramatization contains an element of fiction, because it paints an incomplete interpretation of events based on what people said happen and how the actor/director presents it.
