In the mood for some learning? Then you should make your SPOT below for this challenge.

1 point for any documentary.

2 points for a documentary about dark subject matter.

3 points for a documentary about the horror genre.

1 bonus point for an FTV.

DVD and Blu-ray commentaries are allowed and fall under the same rules, but no FTV point.

This year, we're going to try one small change. If you want to watch a documentary that's less than 40 minutes, you can, but you only receive half the points.

Mockumentaries are also allowed, but they must be feature length.

The Documentary Challenge will begin with June and end with June.

If you need some ideas for what to watch, here's last year's progress thread https://trashepics.com/post/9/197/.

I am not sure why Klownz lost interest in the social media side of things.. he was good at it.

It wasn't anything against TE. He was just burned out on the internet for a while, which I can totally understand. After all, you put your faith in some people, and they turn out to be vindictive ass-hats. It's disheartening, but klownz at least pops in every now and again.

That sucks. You put a lot of faith and confidence in people - only to have it thrown back at you. I can only manage what it is like for you to accommodate people only to have them backstab, and abandon you.

Sorry to sound like a grumpy old stickler for rules but mockumentaries are not documentaries. What We Did in the Shadows is not a documentary series. A mockumentary is a fictional film employing documentary techniques. So whilst you're watching a show about a real life serial kiler, I am watching a series about World War II, someone else wants to watch a COMEDY show about vampires. Sure if someone wants to do a Mockumentary challenge, that's swell but unfortunately I cannot keep compete in this challenge seriously now.

Well... thanks for explaining, I guess. I only included mockumentaries as a carryover from last year's rules and no one said jack shit about it then.

That being said, despite hating rule changes once something started, I'm open to not allowing mockumentaries that aren't feature length movies. Trailer Park Boys, The Office and What We Do in the Shadows honestly may not fit the spirit of the challenge. I do think things like Dirty Cop no Donut and Behind the Mask should count, but these objections really should have been voiced prior to the start of this.

I hope he hasn't left either, but it wouldn't surprise me. I thought he was going to leave with Troma and Johan. Even the slightest disagreement was probably going to be enough to send him over the edge. Hopefully he'll return in October.

I'm trying to be nice, but if he really left because I watched a mockumentary show and he didn't read the rules before hand,,, welll... idk what to say.

I always liked him, but if that is the reason why he left, then that is pretty lame. I can only assume that there was still some animosity from that whole Troma thing on his part.

Yeah I appreciate that and I didn't take part in last year's challenge so I did not realise it included mocks.. but now having come back and seen films like Cannibal Holocaust and Trollhunter included, I just think it's getting a bit silly. To me, if you are going to do a documentary challenge then folks have to watch documentaries - just find something you're interested in. By all means, let's have a separate Found Footage/Mockumentary challenge but I feel movies like Cannibal Holocaust are just taking the buscuit and well be honest, it's a bit lazy..

I was surprised he lasted as long as he did (if that is the case) to be honest - he was always very loyal to Troma. Like you said, the slightest disagreement was probably going to be enough to send him over the edge.

I've not gone over the edge, I just feel if I am competing by watching a serious documentary series about World War II and others are watching famous found footage horror movies or some comedy series, it seems to defy the whole point of the challenge and the chosen topic. Anyway, I shall quit moaning now emoticon..

OK, maybe I will try not to take it so seriously, but I hope no one ends up with just a whole bunch of mockumentary/found footage movies.

I hadn't even thought about found footage movies. I really hate those so I won't be watching them.

Yeah some ff movies are presented as mockumentaries (Cannibal Holocaust), whereas there are others that are not (Paranormal Activity).

I also would like for you to come back to the challenge. Taking into consideration how you feel about it, I'm not against removing mockumentaries entirely from any future Documentary Challenges.

As for found footage, I agree it's lazy to watch them for the challenge. When I think of mockumentaries, I think of something like This Is Spinal Tap. To me, found footage is something else entirely, but it seems the two genres have come to be thought of as the same thing.

Yeah as I replied to Der, some ff movies are presented as mockumentaries whereas others are not. This Is Spinal Tap is definitely one of the best mockumentaries ever made. But yeah, maybe for next year's challenge make it docs only to force some to actually watch docs if they wish to compete, and like I mentioned a separate challenge for mocks or ff movies would be good.
