In the mood for some learning? Then you should make your SPOT below for this challenge.

1 point for any documentary.

2 points for a documentary about dark subject matter.

3 points for a documentary about the horror genre.

1 bonus point for an FTV.

DVD and Blu-ray commentaries are allowed and fall under the same rules, but no FTV point.

This year, we're going to try one small change. If you want to watch a documentary that's less than 40 minutes, you can, but you only receive half the points.

Mockumentaries are also allowed, but they must be feature length.

The Documentary Challenge will begin with June and end with June.

If you need some ideas for what to watch, here's last year's progress thread https://trashepics.com/post/9/197/.

I'd say it's dark subject matter. Can't get much darker than war.

emoticon Since the half point rule is in effect, I'll allow it.

Also, you don't get a point just for watching a mockumentary, if that's why you gave yourself three points for Dirty Cop No Donut.

Yeah, exactly. Mockumentaries are allowed, but you don't get any kind of bonus point for them. Same with commentaries. FTVs are the only bonus point.

I knew I should've included a note about that. I did originally since it confused me too, but no one else seemed to be confused by it last year. But yeah, they're really categories. You don't add them together or anything, except for the FTV point.

The first two deletions are Markus. He made his spot and asked me if war counted as dark subject matter. No clue why he backed out. I think the third deletion was Zombie. I had a notification that he'd replied, but when I looked, there was nothing.

I hope so too. Not sure what else can be done as far as motivating people to participate in challenges goes. I mean, if a cash prize isn't enough... emoticon

Well... thanks for explaining, I guess. I only included mockumentaries as a carryover from last year's rules and no one said jack shit about it then.

I hope he hasn't left either, but it wouldn't surprise me. I thought he was going to leave with Troma and Johan. Even the slightest disagreement was probably going to be enough to send him over the edge. Hopefully he'll return in October.

I also would like for you to come back to the challenge. Taking into consideration how you feel about it, I'm not against removing mockumentaries entirely from any future Documentary Challenges.

As for found footage, I agree it's lazy to watch them for the challenge. When I think of mockumentaries, I think of something like This Is Spinal Tap. To me, found footage is something else entirely, but it seems the two genres have come to be thought of as the same thing.

Rule change: mockumentaries are no longer allowed unless they're feature length. If you've already watched some that don't qualify, you may keep them, but don't watch anymore for this challenge. Pretty sure this isn't going to change anyone's mind about participating if they aren't already, but you can't make everyone happy...

Up to you. Just don't delete your spot. We've had enough deletions for one challenge.

Sometimes the best way to figure out this kind of stuff is trial and error. Next time, including mockumentaries at all can be taken into consideration. Or maybe nothing episodic, which would still allow short documentaries from DVDs or whatever.

But as you said, objections should've been voiced before the start of the challenge...

Dramatization does NOT automatically make something a documentary. As I already told you in PM, I'll allow Deadly Secrets, but it's because you claim it features real footage and people who were involved, not because it's a dramatization.

Now all of you stop stirring up drama in my challenge.

I watched some of the first episode. As you say, it features the actual people involved in the investigation, often sitting in front of the camera themselves talking about what happened or talking over the re-enactment. I stand by my original decision to count Deadly Secrets as a documentary.

Der wins. Congratulations. Only he and Markus put in much effort on this one. To reiterate last year's results: fuck the rest of us.
