A few of the posters here have expressed some interest in this so I will go ahead and throw it out there. For the month of July we will have Challenge of the Apes!

War For the Planet of the Apes is set to open July 14th so I thought it would be fun to immerse myself and others in monkey madness. Here's how this challenge will work:

What counts?
Any movies or TV shows or shorts with an ape or monkey as the protagonist, antagonist or major supporting character. EDIT: By popular demand - any movie or TV show with apes or monkeys (or people in apes or monkeys suits) will count regardless of how major or minor that character is. EDIT: Documentaries will count too.

How do you get points?
It's time based - You get credit for the running time of whatever you watch. This means you can watch TV shows as well as shorts and movies.

For instance, if you watch the first POTA film with Chuck Heston it runs 112 minutes so that's worth 112 points. Then you watch the first episode of the POTA TV series which runs 50 minutes - that gives you 50 more points.

POTA (1968) - 112 points
POTA TV Series (1974) first episode - 50 points
Total so far: 162 points

Easy enough for a monkey to compete.

Can I get bonuses?
Sure. Since the Challenge was inspired by the release of the latest POTA film I've got several bonuses lined up for watching films/TV from that universe:

Watch the original five POTA films (POTA ('68), Beneath the POTA, Escape From the POTA, Conquest of the POTA, & Battle For the POTA) = 50 point bonus.
Watch the more recent extra crispy POTA films (Burton's POTA, Rise of the POTA, Dawn of the POTA & War For the POTA) = 50 bonus points.
Watch the 14 episodes of the POTA TV series from 1974 = 50 point bonus
Watch the 13 episodes of the animated Return to the POTA TV series = 50 point bonus

And because I have a soft spot in my heart for Kong - watch any five Kong films from this official list and get a 50 point bonus:
King Kong ('33), Son of Kong, KK Vs. Godzilla, KK Escapes, King Kong ('76), KK Lives, King Kong (2005), & Kong: Skull Island.

Reading Bonuses:
EDIT: Read any novel or collection of short stories or comics set in either the POTA or Kong Universe and get a 50 point bonus!

ie: read Planet of the Apes by Pierre Boulle = 50 points
read: King Kong by Edgar Wallace = 50 points
read: King Kong Vs. Tarzan by Will Murray = 50 points
read: Tarzan on the Planet of the Apes by Tim Seeley = 50 points
That's 200 bonus points to add to your movie/TV score.

FTVs worth anything?
Not this time. I feel like revisions are good for evolving so I encourage them as much as I do FTVs.

Do I have to watch monkey movies from the POTA and Kong universes?
Nope. As long as the protagonist, antagonist or major supporting characters are apes or monkeys it will count. Heck, even if it's just one scene with a couple of guys wearing ape suits it will count.

Does it have to be horror?
Nope. Any genre counts.

Does it have to be real apes?
WTF!!!! Real monkeys count too but so do stop-motion, men in suits, animated, cgi or Serkisized.

If there is enough interest I'll post the actual challenge thread next week. Challenge will run July 1 through July 31.

Thanks for finding this... didn't realize that both the Lemon Grove Kids and Rat Pfink a Boo Boo featured apes. Both are on my watch list anyway, so now is the time... stop! It's Monkey Time!

...never was a dancing banana more apt (well, maybe never, ha ha).

You're in for a real goof with those two films. Actually, I've only seen part of Rat Pfink so i should watch that too.

Are those softcore movies from Seduction Cinema allowed too? There is comedy sex parodies on both King Kong and POTA called Kinky Kong and Play-mate of the Apes. And I believe their Blair Witch Project movies (Erotic Witch Project) also stars a monkey in a prominent role. I believe they made about 4 of them.

Sure, if the monkey is in a prominent role they count. I'm tempted to relax that ruling and say any movie with a monkey or ape counts. What do you think?

EDIT: the bonuses would still require the specific titles be watched to count.

Yeah I would let them all count but I think that everyone should at least see one of the POTA movies, I mean that is the reason you decided to do this challenge.

OK, you and peeps have convinced me that any movie with an ape or monkey will count for the challenge. I think that will save a lot of headscratching. To get the bonuses you have to watch the titles I listed though.

Guess I can do all of these again, helps that I already own them all. How about bonuses for the novelizations of the sequels?

I thought about including the sequel novelizations. I've owned them for years and never read them! I'm going to check and see how many POTA books there are. I think they have even compiled the b/w comics from the 70s. I still have those in comic book form.

I'm ashamed to say I haven't seen any of the original Planet of the Apes films, but this will be a great reason to pursue these films. Charlton Heston ought to make it good enough (I've only ever seen him in Waynes World 2 and True Lies). Anybody watch "Sanford and Son"? Their Puerto Rican neighbor Julio was one of the original apes. He was great, and I love the episode with the sangria. Hold the garbage.

For a one-off thing, I think the Ape Challenge can be a great thing. I think it could be good to have at least one arbitrary challenge per year, and apes? Why not? Challenges are always a fun opportunity to keep a theme for your movie-watching experiences. Not sure if this is a challenge for further years, but we'll see what the users have to say.

Also, just wanted to throw this out there... there's an episode of "Freddy's Nightmares" I watched recently that ought to count. It's about a monkey with dreams in an animal testing facility. One of the doctors is Howard "Bub" Sherman. Good episode, if you can get the 40 odd minute points for it.

Also also, I'm not very learned on King Kong, so I'll get on some of those too. I'm glad FTVs don't factor, because I can be more frivolous this way.

Actually, he played one of the mutants in Beneath The Planet Of The Apes.emoticon

Don't feel bad I'm pretty uneducated on POTA as well. I remember that I have seen scenes but can't remember if I actually saw a complete movie.
My idea for August is movies from Something Weird Video combined with adult movies. Could workd as 1 off even though there is plenty of choices here for another go if enough interest.

On the Apes franchise:

The original Planet Of The Apes is one of my favorite all time films, it's one of those films that had a huge impact on me as a kid.

Escape From The Planet Of The Apes is my favorite sequel of the franchise, Conquest my second, Beneath, third.

I do like Battle For, but it does suffer from budget constraints, and script changing hands. 20th Century Fox didn't want to put the money in the film, and producers didn't want to continue the dark tone that Paul Dehn was carrying over from Conquest, so it was re written to be more family friendly.

Tim Burton's version, eh, I'll give it credit for doing an ending closer to the original novel.

Love the new franchise, looking forward to War Of...

The live action 70's series is fun, but the typical 70's show of having the 2 lead male heroes being blond and dark haired (Starskey And Hutch, Dukes Of Hazzard, Emergency, Adam-12, etc etc)

The animated series is actually pretty good, it's a combination of the movies, and original book, like the book, the Apes use advanced technology, fly planes...

The original has always been an iconic favorite of mine. My brother worked in a cinema when it came out and sometimes I would go to work with him and sit through films all day - there were only two screens so I often saw the same film multiple times. Planet of the Apes I saw about 15 times! It was my Star Wars as a kid. I imagined myself in that universe a lot - when I was playing outside and running and swinging through trees the apes were after me. And Nova - well, lets jusy say that she figured prominently in a lot of my fantasies.

Charlton Heston and Steve McQueen were my favorite actors in those days. McQueen was awesome in everything and is still the coolest actor of all time - but Heston's sci/fi roles in POTA, The Omega Man & Soylent Green really captured my imagination.

The original is still my favorite of the series. I also like Beneath a lot more than most people do - love the mutants and that bleak ending and of course there's Nova! Escape and Conquest are about equal for me - sometimes I prefer one over the other but they are both great sequels. Battle is the weakest of the first five but still a lot of fun.

I remember the live TV series fondly so I am looking forward to revisiting it. It felt close to Battle in quality. I've never seen the animated series so that will be a treat.

Burton's POTA is the weakest of the series but there are things about it that I like. Most of all, Tim Roth is incredible in his performance and Heston has a great cameo.

The reboot films have impressed me. They have taken the series in a slightly different direction that is evolving in very interesting ways. They riff on the originals without being imitations or overly jokey.

I'm looking forward to the books. I was an avid follower of the comics in the seventies but I have never read any of the novels so those will be treats too I hope.

McQueen is awesome. Bullit is one of my favorite movies.

Love The Omega Man and Soylent Green. Love 70's scifi, period.

Warning, the animated series is very very low tech, repeat animation scenes, questionable acting, but if you can look past that, very well written.

Mmm Nova. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy Beneath. I like James Fransiscus, and I do like how the apes mistake him for Taylor when they see him. I love the Mutants, and how Battle For The POTA ties all of it together.

The books, you get to see how some things were changed, especially Battle.

I have the first 5 films on Blu Ray, and the first two reboots on Blu Ray also, own the animated and live action on DVD.

POTA was a scifi franchise before that was a thing. They had all of the tie in items toys, shows, comics, etc. It's one of the most important franchises in cinema history.

I've got all the Ape movies and the two TV series on DVD. Hopefully I'll do an upgrade to BLU someday. I only have about 30-40 BLUs (big boxset of Buster Keaton accounts for a lot of that).

You can understand why the apes would mistake Franciscus for Taylor - they do look a lot alike. It was almost as if they chose him for that reason. Did you ever see his series Longstreet? I liked it a lot - I wonder how it holds up.

No worries on the low tech animation - I can get past that if the stories suck me in.

I was wavering in my excitement for hosting this challenge but I'm glad I'm doing it now. The reception it has gotten here has fueled my anticipation for it a lot.

I"m starting to look forward to this, even though I may not have time to watch as many as I'd like. I'm looking to "structurally distract" myself with something...
