A few of the posters here have expressed some interest in this so I will go ahead and throw it out there. For the month of July we will have Challenge of the Apes!

War For the Planet of the Apes is set to open July 14th so I thought it would be fun to immerse myself and others in monkey madness. Here's how this challenge will work:

What counts?
Any movies or TV shows or shorts with an ape or monkey as the protagonist, antagonist or major supporting character. EDIT: By popular demand - any movie or TV show with apes or monkeys (or people in apes or monkeys suits) will count regardless of how major or minor that character is. EDIT: Documentaries will count too.

How do you get points?
It's time based - You get credit for the running time of whatever you watch. This means you can watch TV shows as well as shorts and movies.

For instance, if you watch the first POTA film with Chuck Heston it runs 112 minutes so that's worth 112 points. Then you watch the first episode of the POTA TV series which runs 50 minutes - that gives you 50 more points.

POTA (1968) - 112 points
POTA TV Series (1974) first episode - 50 points
Total so far: 162 points

Easy enough for a monkey to compete.

Can I get bonuses?
Sure. Since the Challenge was inspired by the release of the latest POTA film I've got several bonuses lined up for watching films/TV from that universe:

Watch the original five POTA films (POTA ('68), Beneath the POTA, Escape From the POTA, Conquest of the POTA, & Battle For the POTA) = 50 point bonus.
Watch the more recent extra crispy POTA films (Burton's POTA, Rise of the POTA, Dawn of the POTA & War For the POTA) = 50 bonus points.
Watch the 14 episodes of the POTA TV series from 1974 = 50 point bonus
Watch the 13 episodes of the animated Return to the POTA TV series = 50 point bonus

And because I have a soft spot in my heart for Kong - watch any five Kong films from this official list and get a 50 point bonus:
King Kong ('33), Son of Kong, KK Vs. Godzilla, KK Escapes, King Kong ('76), KK Lives, King Kong (2005), & Kong: Skull Island.

Reading Bonuses:
EDIT: Read any novel or collection of short stories or comics set in either the POTA or Kong Universe and get a 50 point bonus!

ie: read Planet of the Apes by Pierre Boulle = 50 points
read: King Kong by Edgar Wallace = 50 points
read: King Kong Vs. Tarzan by Will Murray = 50 points
read: Tarzan on the Planet of the Apes by Tim Seeley = 50 points
That's 200 bonus points to add to your movie/TV score.

FTVs worth anything?
Not this time. I feel like revisions are good for evolving so I encourage them as much as I do FTVs.

Do I have to watch monkey movies from the POTA and Kong universes?
Nope. As long as the protagonist, antagonist or major supporting characters are apes or monkeys it will count. Heck, even if it's just one scene with a couple of guys wearing ape suits it will count.

Does it have to be horror?
Nope. Any genre counts.

Does it have to be real apes?
WTF!!!! Real monkeys count too but so do stop-motion, men in suits, animated, cgi or Serkisized.

If there is enough interest I'll post the actual challenge thread next week. Challenge will run July 1 through July 31.

I don't plan to be a hardass about it but if its just one scene I don't think that qualifies as major supporting monkey. I was thinking about the monkey in the American Pie films - one of the funniest parts but he only has maybe 2-3 minutes of screen time so I wouldn't count him either. Although maybe it would be easier on everyone is I said any monkey or ape character in the film awards points for that film.

A friend and I used to get together weekly and watch random movies whose titles we drew from a can. Early on we established the tradition that anytime a monkey appeared in one of our films we would both take a shot. Fun times. He and I also dropped acid, carved drink glasses from cocoanut shells and watched all five of the original POTA films one night. Or that was our plan anyway. Midway through the fourth film we went to rock and roll bowling and never finished our Ape-a-thon. So, yeah, in his honor I say let all monkeys count no matter the screen time. But you have to take a shot when you see them! emoticon

Rock 'n' Roll Bowling had lasers and smoke and even a disco ball - but the music was loud and rockin' as it should be. It was always packed at the beginning and if you didn't get there early enough you wouldn't even get a lane. Towards the end of the night the lanes would usually clear quite a bit and my friend and I would go into nearly continuous bowling action - throwing a ball in one lane then jumping over to the next and throwing a ball there. Sometimes we would have games going on three lanes. Working off all the White Russians we drank. I always looked forward to that - it was like playing Bally Fireball when all the extra balls got released. What an adrenaline rush.

You and Johan have convinced me to let any monkey movie count so if you want to rewatch Trading Places that's cool.emoticon

BTW, I like the POTA reboots a lot. Hoping that War For the POTA is as good as the last two.

Boggy Creek II has a bit of legendary turkey status but I rather enjoy it. It feels less reality based.

I saw the first one at the movies as a kid and was plenty scared. Especially when they showed the Texarcana sign and I realized that was not very far away from Dallas where I lived at the time.

That was a great list. Was it one of Zeek's?

Yep it's on Zeed's site and it was originally from Red Barracuda. I can't figure out how to cut and paste it over here but here's the link:

You're in for a real goof with those two films. Actually, I've only seen part of Rat Pfink so i should watch that too.

Sure, if the monkey is in a prominent role they count. I'm tempted to relax that ruling and say any movie with a monkey or ape counts. What do you think?

EDIT: the bonuses would still require the specific titles be watched to count.

OK, you and peeps have convinced me that any movie with an ape or monkey will count for the challenge. I think that will save a lot of headscratching. To get the bonuses you have to watch the titles I listed though.

I thought about including the sequel novelizations. I've owned them for years and never read them! I'm going to check and see how many POTA books there are. I think they have even compiled the b/w comics from the 70s. I still have those in comic book form.

The original has always been an iconic favorite of mine. My brother worked in a cinema when it came out and sometimes I would go to work with him and sit through films all day - there were only two screens so I often saw the same film multiple times. Planet of the Apes I saw about 15 times! It was my Star Wars as a kid. I imagined myself in that universe a lot - when I was playing outside and running and swinging through trees the apes were after me. And Nova - well, lets jusy say that she figured prominently in a lot of my fantasies.

Charlton Heston and Steve McQueen were my favorite actors in those days. McQueen was awesome in everything and is still the coolest actor of all time - but Heston's sci/fi roles in POTA, The Omega Man & Soylent Green really captured my imagination.

The original is still my favorite of the series. I also like Beneath a lot more than most people do - love the mutants and that bleak ending and of course there's Nova! Escape and Conquest are about equal for me - sometimes I prefer one over the other but they are both great sequels. Battle is the weakest of the first five but still a lot of fun.

I remember the live TV series fondly so I am looking forward to revisiting it. It felt close to Battle in quality. I've never seen the animated series so that will be a treat.

Burton's POTA is the weakest of the series but there are things about it that I like. Most of all, Tim Roth is incredible in his performance and Heston has a great cameo.

The reboot films have impressed me. They have taken the series in a slightly different direction that is evolving in very interesting ways. They riff on the originals without being imitations or overly jokey.

I'm looking forward to the books. I was an avid follower of the comics in the seventies but I have never read any of the novels so those will be treats too I hope.

I've got all the Ape movies and the two TV series on DVD. Hopefully I'll do an upgrade to BLU someday. I only have about 30-40 BLUs (big boxset of Buster Keaton accounts for a lot of that).

You can understand why the apes would mistake Franciscus for Taylor - they do look a lot alike. It was almost as if they chose him for that reason. Did you ever see his series Longstreet? I liked it a lot - I wonder how it holds up.

No worries on the low tech animation - I can get past that if the stories suck me in.

I was wavering in my excitement for hosting this challenge but I'm glad I'm doing it now. The reception it has gotten here has fueled my anticipation for it a lot.

It's funny that you and peeps are having this discussion because just last night on the way home I was thinking that somewhere along the line my building preference shifted from cinema to pub. They are not as lively here in the states although I have found a few that have a great local "culture" - strong enough that it's probably best to bathe after each visit.

Actually I love pubs best when there's some small band in the corner playing lively folk tunes and the Guinness is flowing with nitro.

Well, I've already had one a few months back. A bit too fruity for my tastes - bit like an IPA. That is the 6th or so beer in a series that Rogue Brewery has done celebrating another Oregon institution: Voodoo Donuts (slogan: Good things Come in Pink Boxes) and it's one of the few sets of bottles that I have collected.

Here's a photo of most of the labels.

image

I missed the Lemon chiffon one somehow. The original maple bacon one is still my favorite. That raspberry one was tasty too. The vodka was alright too! They also make an excellent gin that is not one of their Voodoo Donut tributes.

Rogue is located in Newport Oregon - which is where I would live if I could. On the Oregon coast, there's a great beach, a great hotel (Sylvia Beach Hotel where there are no phones or TVs and every room is done in the spirit of an author - Poe, Hemingway, Verne, Seusss...), and a great American Irish pub as well as the Rogue Brewery. Rogue even gives you a free beer on your birthday - and they don't fool around, it's in a glass the size of a pitcher. That's where my wife and I stopped in after running the Newport marathon a few years back. The bartender started the ball rolling by buying us a free beer and then everyone else continued doing that. They like runners there - actually they like any excuse to order another round. We staggered the mile back to our hotel about three hours later.

One more for the road:
