This is how I approach it...
1-unwatchable
2-watchable
3-good
4-great
5-classic

How about you?

I came back as WolfenEatLepers first but my VPIR posting limit was up to I post every 4 min and was told I was about to be wiped so I self deleted to not give Victory to Dorian/Lep if you get my drift.

Just as you've listed it. On my personal rating's list, I sometimes do a .5 if I can't decide exactly how I feel about a movie, but since half points aren't a thing here, I round down.

I base the rating on both how much I enjoy the movie's plot and how well it's shot or if I like the actors. An intriguing but poorly shot movie can drag down my enjoyment while a boring movie with actors doing their best with what the script gave them can raise my enjoyment.

The way it's listed isn't much different: 1 = Hated it, 2 = Didn't like it, 3 = Liked it, 4 = Really liked it, 5 = Loved it.

I feel that a 10/10 system encourages people to nitpick more, so I went with a simpler system, so you don't have to think as hard. At one point, I considered having both a 5 star AND 10 star system, which would really only be one system, displayed differently based on user preference. This would require the 5 star system to allow half point ratings, and then it would all balance out:

5 star system / 10 star system
0.5 / 1
1.0 / 2
1.5 / 3
2.0 / 4
2.5 / 5
3.0 / 6
3.5 / 7
4.0 / 8
4.5 / 9
5.0 / 10

But that would require me to do math, and change my system from integers to decimals, then double everyone's ratings and divide the overall score in half for the 5-star system. And also redesign the interface for rating stuff, and that's where I'd have to think a bit. It's not too hard, but I'm gonna get drunk instead.

I don't get this way of rating (same as Netflix) because there should be something between "didn't like it" and "liked it".. i.e. "meh!".. you didn't like it or dislike it.. and there is not really much difference between really liking something and loving it to me.

I am terribly sure about that, Foz. If you were to do that then you might aswell have a ten point system IMO emoticon

Fine then. 1=hated, 2=didn't like, 3=meh, 4=liked, 5=loved.

Either way, you're still getting the same point across. 4 to 5 star ratings have been around since forever. It wasn't until imdb that 10 star systems became a thing.

i use the ratings more as a guide to keeping track of what ive seen on imdb, it can be problematic usuing it as a system for a film being 'better' than another, my ratings can usually go 1point either way on another day. Haven't given anything a 1 or 10 as this would mean there's no film better or worse to be seen. Effectively this has just reduced my scoring to an 8 point rating system, but hey dug my grave...

on here I tend to go mostly by personal pref, with a little on how well made/written/acted etc a movie is. so ihave rated a handful of 5s and a couple of 1s but mainly 3or4. The database here has more movies i like, added by myself or like minded folk - i'm guilty of not bothering to add a title if i didn't really care for it, wheras a film i enjoy i'd want more people to watch it so add it here.

Like how TE has Top/bottom 100 and 'film of the year' categories. At the moment a film needs 3 votes to qualify for these lists, looks like about a dozen or so members rate on here, could do with more to reflect a broader viewing preference

Haven't rated any. I prefer the 1-10 scale or 1-5 but allowing half points. A movie that just passed the test (2,5 or 5) a 2 is too low and 3 too high. Also all the movies that are worth a 7 or 9 to me. emoticon
But I have become less and less indulged in rating movies over the years. I always found that a hard thing to do. I rather say what I liked or disliked about it than replying "5/10" Callum style.

You should rate some films only because vistors checking out the site look at the database and say this place gets no traffic...I'm outta here!

I can do with low traffic if the topics do interest me.
I dunno if imdb2 horror section has more traffic but the topics are the F13 theads we saw popping up so often on the old imdb. I can't bother with that any more. Besides I dunno if we really want to have that kind of people starting these hollow topics on here.

Point given but it would be nice to have some decent well intentioned additions here.

With a 10 points system or the possibily for half points I would surely do so.

...in theory the same as 1-10, but divide by 2. Less accurate, but still acceptable. emoticon

5
10: perfect or nearly perfect
9: excellent, one of my all-time favorites, but 1 or 2 little things keep it from perfection

4
8: a great film, with some aspect that held me back from giving it a higher rating
7: a good, solid film, but usually not as entertaining or memorable as 8-10

3
6: a decent film, slightly above average
5: an average film, not terrible but far from great

2
4: below average, with one or two redeeming qualities in there somewhere
3: decidedly below average, with very little to redeem, getting close to bad

1
2: a poor film, nothing to redeem, but not totally bottom of the barrel
1: piss-poor, nothing I enjoyed about it and I want my lost time back

Yeah I see what you're saying but there's a difference between a film being rated a 6 or a 7...if the 5 point system allowed .5's then it would be comparable to the 10 point system. I work with what I got but it does make a difference IMO.

I agree it does make a diff because it's not as precise, but it can still be adapted. A 7.5 is the main rating there is no equivalent for (at least for me, and that's only an issue if you rate on a .5 scale).
