I say......"To Be!"

Kids split up and wander around, are killed with blunt objects and sharp thingies by a masked man, until only one final girl remains. The end.

Now, where's jriddle? emoticon

The qualifications for a movie to be a slasher is a little more specific than some people think. On the surface, certain films seem like they might be, and maybe they're close, but the movies that EVERYONE agrees to be slashers usually include a killer with a more personal motive. I was watching Terror Train last night. Damaged little weirdo kills because he's butthurt over a prank. In The Burning, some guy kills because he's butthurt over a prank. F-13, Jason's mom kills because she's butthurt over her son being dead. in F-13 sequels, Jason kills because he's butthurt over his mom being dead. Leatherface kills for fun and food. Plus, he just runs all over the place, chasing them until he catches them. There's not really any hiding and stalking. Not methodical enough. Not a slasher.

So, does that mean Slumber Party Massacre and Final Exam aren't slashers since the killers have no motives?
And the original Halloween, ignoring the sequels, Michael had no motive, he was pure evil, not a slasher?

I'm not saying a movie can't be a slasher if there's no motive, or that's the only thing stopping TCM from being one. It is slasher-ish, but not enough to be in that category, imo.

So Halloween which is seen as some kind of pioneer of the slasher genre is actually slasher-ish?
Ok I agree for a movie that kickstarted the subgenre there are way better ones before and after it.

Halloween is far more a slasher than TCM.

All your posts on imdb were either about The Bad Seed, Dolls or your distaste for James Wan. emoticon

Yeah. I've never seen TCM as one either. Of course if we were JRiddle, we would only see Halloween as a slasher and no other movie haha

Haha yeah, it was in some thread about slashers on IMDB. I know, vague. Seemed when anyone made any slasher related thread on there he was right there to lecture people.

I say no, although it does have some of the key elements of slashers and was no doubt an influence on many of them.

I would say it belongs to the same subgenre as The Hills Have Eyes, Hunter's Blood, Just Before Dawn, and Slaughterhouse. It predates all of those and I'd say it, along with the earlier Deliverance, more or less started the backwoods inbred cannibal subgenre.

emoticon I'd throw American Gothic (1988) in there too. And when I first started thinking about this, I thought maybe Morher's Day (1980) but that's really of the rape/revenge subgenre.
