Been a while since I saw this one so I figured it was time for a revisit.

I liked it. While i prefer the horror comedy tone of the first two films, this was pretty good, gory, dark stuff. I got kind of a Hellraiser vibe from it too with the BDSM fetish thing the chick did in order to suppress her undead hunger. As I said it's gory, and this had to have been the uncut version cuz some of this was downright brutal as fuck. The zombies this time around, particularly the ones that come outta the steel barrels, are truly a hideous sight. Some fantastic old school make up and latex work.

Parts of it had this sort of cringey "My So Called Life" type feel with the Romeo + Juliet plotline but overall, not too shabby.

Call me controversial, but I actually prefer this film to the others in the series. I liked the gore, the story etc.

I was never the biggest fan of the first or the second. I rated the first film a 6 and it was good entertainment, but I liked this one the best.

I agree it had a Hellraiser vibe to it. I think it is great.

This is one of the first zombie movies I watched before I was big on horror. It was recorded onto a VHS and I remember the opening freaked me out, with the zombie that the toxin was supposed to kill, but didn't.

I think Brian Yuzna's done some good movies. He gets a good fx, but I still prefer the first two. Yeah, I prefer part 2, which is cheesy and made for kids, but I still thought it was a lot of fun.

One thing I remember about 3 is some criminal whose spine got partially ripped out, and so he had a really long and goofy looking neck.

I've always liked the trilogy of this series, parts 4 and 5 I don't recognize because they're just so bad imo. The original I consider classic 80's horror, part 3 the next best and part 2 a cheesey but fun sequel. I own the trilogy on DVD and revisit them most Octobers.

Parts 4 and 5 are so bad, I always felt like we should pause while watching them and just say with a sense of profound reverence: "we are witnessing History being made here, my friends. Never before has a horror film been THIS bad. Ed Wood had some klunkers, but Jesus fucking Christ on a pogo stick, just LOOK at how damned bad these movies are."

But yeah, parts 1,2, and 3 are all solid, all in different ways. It's kind of interesting how you have to think about them all in different ways to appreciate them for what they are, but in their own ways they are all worthwhile, and solid.

whenever this movie comes up, I make a point of mentioning the author Dennis Etchison, who did novelizations of some John Carpenter movies under pen names. He also published some short stories on his own, and a bunch of them remind me of this movie. Just the whole general feeling of people out very late at night in Los Angeles, going into a 7-Eleven and having horrifying things happen to them... that was kind of his thing.

Also, I'm half watching Superman 2 right now, and Sarah Douglas (Colonel Sinclair in ROTLD 3) is the female of the three evil Kryptonians. I always thought she was the same actress who played the ruthless military agent lady in Repo Man too, but... guess not.

I'm familiar with Etchison's Halloween 2 and 3 novelizations. They're really good. Didn't know he had any short stories out there. From how you've described them, I'm interested in reading them. Urban horror appeals to me greatly.

I know there's a good one in the anthology Dark Forces, edited by Kirby McCauley. He (Dennis Etchison) had at least a couple of anthologies all on his own, with some other good stuff. Yes, absolutely worth checking out.

RotLD 3 is a refreshing change of pace after the first two films. Don't get me wrong. I love the first, it's one of my favorite horror films, and the second is mostly good. We didn't need more of the same again though.

My favorite of the barrel zombies is the one who's so deformed, his attempts to move end up ripping half his face off of his skull. As you said, hideous.

This one always got a lot of praise but I never cared for it and I am a Yuzna fan. I like part 2 better which usually gets shit on.
