Been a while since I saw this one so I figured it was time for a revisit.

I liked it. While i prefer the horror comedy tone of the first two films, this was pretty good, gory, dark stuff. I got kind of a Hellraiser vibe from it too with the BDSM fetish thing the chick did in order to suppress her undead hunger. As I said it's gory, and this had to have been the uncut version cuz some of this was downright brutal as fuck. The zombies this time around, particularly the ones that come outta the steel barrels, are truly a hideous sight. Some fantastic old school make up and latex work.

Parts of it had this sort of cringey "My So Called Life" type feel with the Romeo + Juliet plotline but overall, not too shabby.

Parts 4 and 5 are so bad, I always felt like we should pause while watching them and just say with a sense of profound reverence: "we are witnessing History being made here, my friends. Never before has a horror film been THIS bad. Ed Wood had some klunkers, but Jesus fucking Christ on a pogo stick, just LOOK at how damned bad these movies are."

But yeah, parts 1,2, and 3 are all solid, all in different ways. It's kind of interesting how you have to think about them all in different ways to appreciate them for what they are, but in their own ways they are all worthwhile, and solid.

whenever this movie comes up, I make a point of mentioning the author Dennis Etchison, who did novelizations of some John Carpenter movies under pen names. He also published some short stories on his own, and a bunch of them remind me of this movie. Just the whole general feeling of people out very late at night in Los Angeles, going into a 7-Eleven and having horrifying things happen to them... that was kind of his thing.

Also, I'm half watching Superman 2 right now, and Sarah Douglas (Colonel Sinclair in ROTLD 3) is the female of the three evil Kryptonians. I always thought she was the same actress who played the ruthless military agent lady in Repo Man too, but... guess not.

I know there's a good one in the anthology Dark Forces, edited by Kirby McCauley. He (Dennis Etchison) had at least a couple of anthologies all on his own, with some other good stuff. Yes, absolutely worth checking out.
