The Crime Challenge will be the monthly challenge for this February. Any movie or show that focuses on crime on either side of the law counts. The points are run time based. Since the month has already started, the challenge is starting now. I hope you'll join in.

Any questions or comments regarding the challenge belong here.

I think this could be a great thing. I can jump right into crime like that. One of the best genres out there, because it leads to so many exploitation tropes that we all love so much, like sex, drugs, prison, revenge, gunfights, car chases, etc.

Scorsese is the best. Most of his movies are about crime, and he takes you in deep. Personally, I think the Godfather films are a bit overrated, but maybe where crime shines best is on the tv. Shows like "Sons of Anarchy" and "The Punisher" are excellent crime/dramas. "The Sopranos", "Oz", Quentin Tarantino, "Batman"... if you watch superhero stuff, it's often the crime-fighting type. My point is there's so much out there, it'll be easy to participate in this challenge.

Or fine tune it. Any tag will work, not just genres:

This month gives me a great excuse to rewatch RoboCop.

Hell yeah to Scorsese. Could take up several days just watching his stuff.

Maybe I should get back to Sons of Anarchy. I've only been delaying it for a couple years now.

The Silence of the Lambs is more of a crime movie, than a horror movie. Fact!

Agreed. Not all serial killer movies are horror. Se7en's like that as well.

Sure it has a few horror elements (mostly psychological, and perhaps the finale), but Buffalo Bill doesn't actually stalk and kill people during the movie and it's more about the investigation and discovering the whereabouts of the serial killer than outright horror. Never understood people that think otherwise really..

And Se7en has more murders but the fact they are not shown in any graphic detail stops it from being an outright horror again. The only scene I would consider close to being horror-esque is that famous jump scare.. I guess it inspired Saw in some ways, but the difference between Se7en and Saw is Saw is more focused on the actual horror and scares, and less on the police investigation.

Do slashers count because murder is a crime or would it go like this:
TCM - no. Murder but not a lot of police scenes.
TCM 2 - Yes. Lefty Enright, the police officer, is in a lot of scenes.

They count. Like you said, murder's a crime.

The only time maybe slashers shouldn't count is with something like Child's Play. Chucky murders and sometimes the police get involved, but since he's a doll, is it technically a crime? Same with A Nightmare on Elm Street since Freddy mainly murders in dreams. I guess just use your best judgment with slashers like those.
