Who do you think the best bands are? Of all time, or of the moment. I think the chemistry of a band is important to consider, because it's kind of like a machine. If all the pieces fit together, the groove is gonna be there, and it'll be music to your ears.

Also worth considering is a band's longevity, and how much shitty material they've put out. That's why I wouldn't put a band like Pink Floyd on this list, because they released an album full of animal tracks. FUCK... THAT...

My picks:

Creedence Clearwater Revival may be the best band ever. They fuckin' rocked, and only made a finite number of albums, but EVERY track is great. The same can be said about Led Zeppelin. Those guys never had any dud tracks. Or at least a mere handful of mediocre ones at best.

The Rolling Stones never disappoint me, either. They've released a lot more material, which gives them more room for error for the harsh critics, but I tend to like all their tracks. They have so many goddamn hits! The Beatles got a little more druggie/weird with some tracks, but they're otherwise almost on par.

Another thing about these bands is that they didn't change their core lineup much, if at all. It's all about that chemistry, and these are generic examples, but I still fucking love these bands. There are probably a few other great examples out there, but I can't think of them right now.

I agree with a lot of what people are saying in this thread, and I'm just gonna throw out Steely Dan as a possibility. What do you think of them?? They had really high standards for what they released, and I would say they probably approached perfection more than most bands.

I always thought 38 Special was a HELL of a good band, I think they should have been way more famous than they ever got to be. They should be on any reasonable list of great bands, even a short list.

How about Weezer, too? They really stand out for me... they're just about exactly what a band should be.

That's a great song! I have to admit, I had forgotten that that was by 38 Special (or maybe I never knew it was them in the first place). It sounds sort of like Bryan Adams to me, maybe with a little influence from Paul Young, or Don Henley. Anyway, good for 38 Special, for trying something unusual!

In your original post for this thread, you mentioned Creedence Clearwater Revival. Did you catch this amazing scene from American Horror Story 1984? It's a little over three minutes long. The best moment is at about 2:08 to 2:13, but if you can just tolerate the first couple minutes, they make that moment make a little (not much) sense.

Also, my favorite bands... I still like the basic old stuff. I would say Bad Company, 38 Special, early Foreigner, Van Halen, Boston (of course, ha ha), Rush, Triumph, Kansas, some Molly Hatchet, Loverboy, of course The Who, J Geils Band, etc are my favorite bands.
