Who do you think the best bands are? Of all time, or of the moment. I think the chemistry of a band is important to consider, because it's kind of like a machine. If all the pieces fit together, the groove is gonna be there, and it'll be music to your ears.

Also worth considering is a band's longevity, and how much shitty material they've put out. That's why I wouldn't put a band like Pink Floyd on this list, because they released an album full of animal tracks. FUCK... THAT...

My picks:

Creedence Clearwater Revival may be the best band ever. They fuckin' rocked, and only made a finite number of albums, but EVERY track is great. The same can be said about Led Zeppelin. Those guys never had any dud tracks. Or at least a mere handful of mediocre ones at best.

The Rolling Stones never disappoint me, either. They've released a lot more material, which gives them more room for error for the harsh critics, but I tend to like all their tracks. They have so many goddamn hits! The Beatles got a little more druggie/weird with some tracks, but they're otherwise almost on par.

Another thing about these bands is that they didn't change their core lineup much, if at all. It's all about that chemistry, and these are generic examples, but I still fucking love these bands. There are probably a few other great examples out there, but I can't think of them right now.

Those and others somewhat eg the first 3 albums from marillion are some of the best progrock albums ever, but most of the other stuff they made is crap (esp once fish left)

Anthrax would have made my list too if I was only counting the Belladonna albums.

State of Euphoria kinda stinks; it's noticeably weaker than the albums before and after, even if, oddly enough, it does contain my favorite Anthrax song: "Be All, End All."

Oh, pish posh. State of Euphoria definitely has weaker production than the others, but the songs are all there. The only one I wouldn't miss is that short little instrumental, 13.

I like State of Euphoria, but yeah, "Be All, End All" is the best on there. Probably wouldn't call it my favorite Anthrax song. I enjoy some songs from Spreading the Disease and Persistence of Time just as much.

You think Pink Floyd lack longevity because they put out shitty material like Animals? You must be kidding. Have you actually heard Animals? As zed mentioned, it's one of their best albums and my own personal favourite.

Too many great bands to mention, but few more I consider:

The Beatles
Black Sabbath
The Clash
Cream
The Cure
Dream Theater
Genesis
Iron Maiden
Judas Priest
King Crimson
Led Zeppelin
Massive Attack
Nine Inch Nails
Opeth
Pink Floyd
Porcupine Tree
Radiohead
Rush
Talking Heads
Yes

I've heard Animals once maybe, and it was rubbing me the wrong way. Maybe I'm being too hard on it. I'll give it another listen though. Don't get me wrong about Pink Floyd though. They've got some great shit out there, but as a psychedelic rock band of the era, they get a bit too weird sometimes.

There are a bunch of bands that I could say are near perfect, at least up to a certain point. I think Radiohead up to In Rainbows was really solid. Then the King of Limbs came out and that was kinda shit. I think Maiden's "Final Frontier" is shit too, but everything before that is great or at least really good.

Maybe it was the animal noises that were rubbing you up the wrong way emoticon, but the 3 central songs, especially Dogs are great. Do give it another chance. I don't think being occasionally weird means a band cannot be labelled as one of the best.

I thought King of Limbs was decent (Codex is one of my favourite songs of theirs) and A Moon Shaped Pool was probably a return to form, but In Rainbows was definitely a peak.

I think I must disagree with you somewhat that a band cannot be deemed "one of the best" if one or two of their albums are not up to scratch, are not consistent or lack longevity. If Pink Floyd, Iron Maiden, whoever can still sell out a stadium, then they have longevity enough to be consider one of the "the best". Maybe no band is "perfect" either..

Dream Theater is definitely perfect. All of their albums are perfect, especially The Astonishing.

They might just have the most impressive musicianship, but too many ballads! I'm starting to think Mekong Delta might be perfect, which is surprising since their bassist is the only constant member.
