Two men assume their month-long duties to tend a lighthouse, but madness starts to set in.
Shooting in B&W worked great for this film, not only for the time period it took place in, but with the overall feel of the film. Same with the aspect ratio. Seeing as how there were only (for 99% of the film) two characters, it made it feel more personal.
Not positive exactly what the film was about. It was either Ephraim going insane, Ephraim already insane, or we were seeing two different sides of t... Continue »

A man returns to LA in hopes of rekindling a romance with his ex-wife, but ends up getting mixed up in an attempt to hijack an armored truck.
This is one of the few movies I've seen that fall into the film-noir category. It's also one of the few Burt Lancaster movies I've seen.
There was a lot going on in this film. Tragic romances, double-crosses, double-double crosses, gunfights, fistfight.
This was a really well put together film. The acting was above par (with one brief scene excluded), sets... Continue »

If you've seen any other Saw movie, you know what to expect here. Yeah, they're trying to pretend it's not really a sequel, but a spinoff, but who are we kidding here? Okay, so it's a copycat killer who has no real connection to John Kramer, but so what? It's still the same old shit. This is as much a sequel to Saw as "A New Beginning" is a sequel to Friday the 13th.

The fact that it stars Chris Rock is something interesting, I guess. He's actually not such a bad actor in a serious roll, but I... Continue »

During WWI, two British soldiers are tasked with a mission to stop an ill-fated attack on a German fortified position.
I'm ashamed to admit that I don't really know that much about WWI, aside from the basic facts, such as cause, combatants and the immediate outcome and how the terms basically made WWII inevitable.
The movie itself is gritty and action-packed, with an occasion lull to let the viewers catch their breath before things blow up again (sometimes literally).
The British accent and sl... Continue »

So, I've been watching "How I Met Your Mother" lately, and it made me think this would be a fun group to have as friends.
If you could pick any TV family, friends, group, etc., who would they be?

When I'm 64? That was 15 years ago. Dude put on the best concert I've ever been to, and that was only a couple years ago.

He's got a new Hulu doc next month that I want to watch. I need to get a new computer so I can download it instead.

I watched a Twilight Zone twofer with "To Serve Man", a classic episode with big-headed aliens, Richard Kiel, and double meanings... and then the Frisby episode, which is one of my favorites.

Twilight Zone was known to dabble in different genres, and this is definitely a comedic effort. Frisby claims to have done it all, and every time he's called out on a contradiction, he has an excuse or an amendment to the story. Reminds me of a guy I know... but I think his nicknames are what makes it. Arc... Continue »

A high school girl takes a babysitting job at a remote house, but she starts getting disturbing and threatening calls.
Remake of the 1979 classic. Sometimes it's difficult to remake a film, especially a well-known one. I thought they did a pretty good job. Not sure if the original ended the same way (been at least 30 years since seeing it), but the ending of this version was pretty telegraphed.
I was expecting Jill's love of running to play a more significant part. The killer, when we get to see... Continue »

Amazon Prime knows me well. For a DTV looking turkey, this wasn't too bad. It has a Blade Runner atmosphere and various sci-fi tropes. You have to with a title like that, right?

Roddy Piper plays the lead, a detective trying to find some escaped/dead prisoner he used to know (Billy Drago) who's been infected by some weird alien parasite. This is probably the only time I've seen Drago in a prominent role, and Roddy Piper definitely cashes in his cool points for this. He's still basically a rip-o... Continue »

Heard this on the radio this afternoon.
Apparently, one of the actors in the movie turned out to be a serial killer. He played a surgical assistant, and he was convicted of killing six people.

The gist is this: watch movies or TV episodes with the word "Don't" in the title.
Points are as follows:
FTV: 1 point
Movie: 2 points
TV episode: 1 point

Any genre accepted. Only exclusion is tv series with "Don't" in the title of the series, but episodes OF the series with "Dont" will count.

Whatcha think?

Last night at about 10 to midnight, I decided to put this movie on. It's a fairly decent early 80s detective story about the one and only Charles Bronson as he hunts a fit young asshole who hates women. Now this dude clearly has issues, stripping naked before he pursues his young attractive victims. There has to be something sexual about what and why he does these things, but he doesn't try anything dirty on them. He just wants to kill him. What a weirdo.

As the pieces connect, you begin to not... Continue »

Wow... the only Purge movie I've been avoiding turns out to be the only one I liked. I figured it would be a politically motivated movie, but... of course it is. It also happens to be the only way in hell that this series' ridiculous premise could ever get off the ground. Government subsidized rioting with undercover mercenaries to take out the lower class.

I actually liked the characters. The buff hero was pretty bad-ass, and the progression was decent too. People are unsure how to react, star... Continue »

The bad guy wants to take over the universe, and the good guys are out to stop him.
This is one of those films that has so many bad elements mixed in, it comes across more enjoyable than it should. Wise-cracking robots, hot women in skimpy costumes, cheesy special effects and bad writing/editing. Oh, and toss in David Hasselhoff for good measure. On the plus side, it starred Caroline Munro, one of the more well-known B movie actresses.
People who can shoot lasers out of their eyes, Amazons on an... Continue »

This film is based on the real-life story of Agnes Newton Keith, an American author who was at Sandakan when the Japanese army invaded. The white residents were all sent to prison camps; men in one, women and children in another. It details the hardships that the prisoners went through, including murder, forced labor, and rape.
I'm a WWII junkie, so I found the film extremely interesting. When most people think of WWII prisoner camps, they think of the German concentration camps. But the Japane... Continue »

So, this lowkey zombie movie is supposedly a comedy, but I didn't really see anything to laugh at. It was really quirky, but that's not the same thing as funny. But there was one single guy in the theater who kept laughing, so I guess some people must find it humorous. I just thought it was weird. It seemed like the sort of thing Quentin Dupieux (Rubber, Wrong, Wrong Cops) would have made. Adam Driver's and Bill Murray's characters made it clear in a few parts that they were well aware that they... Continue »

I watched this a bunch when it first came on cable. Pretty much every few days, I'd give it another whirl, but it's been a few years and I'd mostly forgotten about it.

Of the Cornetto trilogy, I definitely like Shaun the most, but Fuzz and this one are tied. I wish Edgar Wright would be more redundant with his career and make these types of movies again. Baby Driver was alright, but it was definitely trying too hard to be 'cool', whereas these movies are so funny, the effort to be cool is less... Continue »

For the most part, I like Alexandre Aja's movies despite the handful of remakes he did early on in his career. I'm one of those people who still groans at the mention of yet another remake, but I occasionally enjoy them. That includes Aja's remakes even though the most memorable aspect about them tends to be the gore.

When I heard there was going to be a new Aja movie on Netflix, I was looking forward to watching it. I was a little disappointed to discover it wouldn't be a horror movie, but I... Continue »

The same basic setup as Curse of the Golden Flower: Tail end of the Tang dynasty in the Chinese imperial court in the late 9th century.
Whereas Curse had the Empress as the figure the story revolves around, Banquet revolves around the Crown Prince, who has left the court to be am actor. He is dragged back into the imperial intrigue when he gets news that his father, the Emperor, has died from what can best be described as less than clear conditions.
Complicating the matter is that the Empress an... Continue »

I always liked this movie. I remember renting it on vhs in the late 90s and said it was my favorite of the Alien movies. It's easy to hate on Alien3, but most people only suck the first two movie's dicks. AR is never held in high regards.

Over the years, my opinion changed to think Aliens was the best when I was in Cameron fanboy mode, but now, I think the first movie is the best. It's visually defining, slow burning, and moodier than all the other movies.

A1 - single alien on space ship
A2 -... Continue »

This movie is about the 442nd Infantry Regiment, from inception and one of their most well-known engagements, where they rescued a group of soldiers surrounded by German artillery.
Another really well done war film, with a lot of action, as well as a surprising amount of humor, but well placed.
I appreciate how the deaths were handled. There were no long lingering scenes with someone crying over the death of a good friend. It's treated like what I imagine it would be in combat. "He's dead." and... Continue »

US Marines use tactics learned from the Chinese by a Marine Colonel to take the strategic island of Makin.
This movie is based on the real troop of marines that cleaned out Makin Island. Not sure how much is fact based as opposed to fiction, but I intend to find out. Going to pick up the book Carlson's Raid.
The first half hour or so is about the forming of the unit, training and such. Gives you a little background on some of the troops, so if/when they die you may feel some sympathy.

Bio-pic of Wall Street wunderkind Jordan Belfort, who rose from nothing to make many, many millions of dollars, most of it shady.
Interesting flick giving a little insight into the background workings of the NYSE, and how easily money can corrupt an otherwise decent person. Drugs, hookers, alcohol, drugs, insider trading, stock manipulation, drugs. All (allegedly) a big part of Wall Street.
Clocking in at three hours, it does require a time investment. They could have knocked out at least fifte... Continue »
