I was waiting on Matheny to reclaim her place as host, but doesn't look like that's going to happen. So, here goes...

Welcome to the 2017 October Challenge. And for many of us, this is the first one away from the IMDb Horror board, which means it's no longer required to save your progress. So, fuck that no life having little cocksucker that used to make it necessary to delete the OP. Seriously. Kill yourself, whoever you were.

So, the rules, as I remember. To complete this challenge, one must watch at least 31 Horror films in the month of October. At least 16 of which shall be first time viewings. All are welcome to watch and list as many as possible.

No TV shows, no Documentaries. Horror films only.

If you're not positive as to whether or not a movie is of the Horror genre, just use your own judgement. If you feel like there's a little Horror in there, then it counts.

I'm gonna go with 45 minutes minimum for a movie to count.

Challenge begins when October begins, and ends with October ends.

No, wait! if I remember correctly, the challenge usually runs until 6 AM November 1st. So, for anyone wanting to have an all night Halloween marathon, there ya go!

If anyone has any questions or comments... https://trashepics.com/post/9/161/

Remember to list the number of movies/FTVs at the bottom, or it will not be counted in the results thread.

This is the year of trash. And this will no doubt prove to be the trashiest October Challenge of them all!

And this is where you make your spot. Have fun!

I see you rewatched Messiah Of Evil (1973) for the challenge. Do you know of any good creepy films like it?

Well, there's Let's Scare Jessica To Death, which I don't really like, or think is anything like Messiah Of Evil, but it seems to be a pretty well liked movie, and considered similar in tone to Messiah Of Evil. So, if you haven't seen that, you might like it.

And there's also Vampyres (1974) and Jean Rollin's The Iron Rose (1973), which I think fits into the category more so than Let's Scare Jessica.

Perhaps this one.

Thanks! I seen Let's Scare Jessica To Death, I liked it, but it wouldn't be as great as Messiah Of Evil. I am a fan of Vampyres (1974). I actually seen The Iron Rose (1973) for this challenge, and while I really liked it, it had a weird vibe to it - the ending especially was bizarre. Good choice!

I have never seen Fangs of the Living Dead (1969). This looks good. I see it is from the guy who directed The Blind Dead series. I also noticed I own a copy of it, even though I have never heard of it before. It was included in one of those Mill Creek sets.

Cheers!

Thanks! I seen it - great film!

I seen Malatesta's Carnival of Blood (1973) for the challenge, and it was awesome, it reminded me very much of Messiah. You should check it out if you haven't emoticon

I should do these things once in awhile, I don't think I've ever done one, even on IMDB. emoticon

My spot.

PS God damn it, I thought this got accidentally deleted somehow.... I have been listing the movies I have watched in a post at the end of this thread. It's on page 8, as of Oct 27, but that could change, of course... anyway, I have been watching plenty of horror movies this month, and I will probably succeed in the challenge. If not, I'll be really close... it is possible I will get whisked away for some family stuff and be unable to reach 31 movies, in the last day or so, but I'm sure that my overall effort here is respectable.

I have White Noise on the agenda as well, Beatnik... mainly because a friend was cleaning off her DVD shelf a few years ago and gave me the DVD, but I never got around to watching it. Good to see you enjoyed it.

I got White Noise under similar circumstances - although it was an anonymous donation at the library. As manager I get first grabs!

Keaton is great in it and I found myself emotionally invested in the story. I was a bit shocked at it's low rating on IMDb but I liked it.

Good to see some love for Berberian Sound Studio, think it's an excellent film. Toby Jones is great in everything and he really nails it in this. Seems obvious to say but the sound engineering is fantastic, creates really bizarre sense of constant tension.

awesome The Blob poster btw!

I was excited to finally see Berberian. I'm glad i had not read anything about it as it really kept me guessing what was going to happen next. It put me in the mood to watch Anguish again - not exactly sure why but i think they would compliment each other. Of course, what i really wanted to see was the film within the film in Berberian.

The Blob poster was a lucky find on Google images. I was looking for somethoing horror related to represent "Spot" when I claimed mine here.

My spot & hello to allemoticon
FTV's in red
01.10

1 Cult of Chucky (2017) 4/10
Well this pretty much sucked & some of the dialogue is cringe inducing. Feels messy & thrown together too.

2 Leatherface (2017) 6.5/10
A young Leatherface escapes from a 60s loony bin with fellow psychos and a hot nurse & it all goes kinda Devil's Rejects throughout much of the film before hurridly wrapping things up in final 15 mins.
As a TTCM edition it's not great, as a stand alone road movie horror though it's not bad & sufficiently brutal & gory to keep your attention. Overall it's undemanding but passable, bonus half point for some sweet gore with prctical FX.

3 It (2017) 6/10
Not as good as I was hoping but better than I was expecting & quite effective in parts.

4 The Girl With All the Gifts (2016) 8/10
Excellent UK dystopian infected film showing there's life in the subgenre yet with some great ideas to go with the grittiness. Not gonna say anything about the plot but it's highly recommended.

02.10

5 Get Out (2017) 8/10
I knew next to nothing about this before seeing it & had a blast with it, hearkens nicely back to those bad old 70s creepy paranoia horror-thrillers, with some surprisingly successful humour too.

6 Ouija: Origin of Evil (2016) 6.5/10
Surprisingly a lot more enjoyable & entertaining than it has any right to be.

7 Alien Covenant (2017) 6/10
Like Prometheus, this seems more concerned with pleasing visuals than anything else. I did like it better though, which probably isn't saying much, as overall it's nothing special.

03.10
8 Nightwish (1989) 610
A professor & students investigate paranormal phenomena at an old mansion & encounter everything from demons to aliens in this batshit nuts flick which tries to shoehorn in as much stuff as possible. Overall silly but enjoyable stuff with FX by Nicotero & Co.

9 The Last Supper (2005) 6.5/10
Lo fi, SOV twisty-turny plotted Japanese/HK collaboration regarding a renowned surgeon who's also a cannibal. I personally liked it but the low budget might put some off.

10 Terror Night/Bloody Movie (1987) 5/10
Clunky slasher somewhat elevated by some decent kills and look it's Grizzly Adams!emoticon

04.10
11 The Conjuring (2013) 7/10
Decided to revisit this & it's still a solid film although I actually preferred the sequel funnily enough.

12 Annabelle Creation (2017) 5.5/10
Pretty undemanding but has its moments.

13 The Void (2016) 6.5/10
I quite liked this & found it darker than I was expecting.

14 The Collection (2012) 7/10
Batshit nuts sequel that's completely stupid but a whole lotta fun from start to finish with a great pace

05.10
15 Final Destination 5 6.5/10
Undemanding & a film to be enjoyed purely for its set pice kills.

16 A Cure for Wellness (2016) 7.5/10
An executive sent to retrieve a CEO from a mysterious Swiss health spa uncovers sinister goings on in this strange, absorbing & really quite good little horror.

17 Life (2017) 6/10
Takes itself way too seriously but has its moments & an entertaiing third act

06.10
18 The Conjuring 2 (2016) 7.5.10
I really like this one & find it solid and effective stuff, even if I think the real life story is all bollocks.

19 SAW VI (2009) 6/10
Dumb but fun edition

20 Saw 3D Final Chapter (2010) 5.5/10
Meh

21 Friend Request (2016) 2/10
Fuck me this was absolutely terrible.

07.10
22 Cell (2016) 3/10
Boring & not especially coherent Stephen King adaptation, starts off quite promising too before quickly going downhill.

23 The Bar (2017) 6/10
A bunch of patrons trapped in a Madrid bar begin to turn on each other with so-sol results. Watched this on impulse after realising it was from one of my fave directors Alex de Iglesia, but it's easily his weakest film for me, although not bad overall.

08.10
24 The Ninth Gate (1999) 6/10
Hadn't seen this since its release & disliked at the time but it improved on a revisit.

25 Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982) 7/10
I love this flick.

09.10
26 The Thing (2011) 5/10
Essentially a rehash of the first & some nice FX aside, pretty dull.

27 A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987) 7/10
A childhood fave & srill solid fun

28 Night of the Creeps (1986) 7.5/10
Thrill me.emoticon

10.10
29 Amityville Awakening (2017) 3/10
Watched this purely cuz was from director of Maniac remake which I really liked. This sucked balls though.emoticon

30 Lifeforce (1985) 6/10
Another film I didn't like the first time round but had fun with on a revisit. Coulda been leaner though.

11.10
31 Gerald's Game (2017) 7/10
Surprisingly solid

emoticonCHALLENGE COMPLETEemoticon

32 We Are Not Alone (2016) 3/10
Crappy Peruvian ghost horror that turns ito The Exorcist in the third act

33 Day of the Dead (1985) 10/10
My second favourite horror of all time after The Exorcist.

12.10
34 Holocaust 2000 (1977) 6/10
Weird Italian Omen knock off that I quite liked despite its rather muddled plot.

35 The AntiChrist (1974) 6.5/10
Entertaining Italian Exorcist Knock off.

36 Tremors (1990) 7/10

13.10
37 Flatliners (1990) 6/10

38 Cat's Eye (1985) 7.5/10

This would've been much better as a short and outlives its novelty after 30 minutes.

Trapped American office workers in Colombia must kill each other to survive in this daft but solidly enjoyable horror from Greg McClean.
