I didn't care for Jaws when I first saw it either. I'd seen all sorts of "Scariest Movies" lists, and this was often in the top 10. Sometimes, it was even the number 1 spot, and that pissed me off. The movie isn't scary. The movie is just... Jaws.

With that said, it's well made. Roy Sheider is great, Richard Dreyfuss was on a role back then, and Robert Shaw was gnarly as Quint. It ain't scary, but I still think it's a solid movie. Part 2 is pretty good too, since it still has Scheider, and part 3(D) is a step down, but it's got the Dennis Quaid in it. Now once you get to part 4, you start to feel pretty weird about the series. It's so bad, it's kind of good.

Also, don't forget that Mallrats named it's two main characters after these guys, Brody and Quint.

This is exactly why it should not be classified as a horror movie for me - Sure there are a couple of effective jump scares, and the opening is very horror-esque, but it is essentially an adventure movie, certainly during it's 2nd half.
