People seem to be really offended that I don't like a mainstream Hollywood horror. This reminds me of that time on imdb where I hated on 'Inside' and people thought I had to be trolling so they banned me. I'd lost my account of many years, hundreds of ratings and posts, and dozens of reviews. Glad to see the good old days haven't gone away completely. But you can't ban me here! I run this dump! Well, actually... I did the dumbest thing ever and made a way that you can get rid of me, but fuck if I'll ever tell you how!

Definition of paranormal: Events or phenomena such as telekinesis or clairvoyance that are beyond the scope of normal scientific understanding. Our heroine has recurring visions of a killer with electrokinesis. MY BAD IF THAT SEEMS PARANORMAL TO ME.

And yes, I know the twist and I've seen it done before. Technically not a ghost, but it plays out very much like your usual J-horror, which I've never been a fan of, so does my opinion of this movie really surprise anyone? That's like expecting Johan to like First Blood or The Thing.

This movie is definitely flashy, too. Besides the literal sense of lights flashing and jump cuts and erratic movements, this movie reminds me of another turkey I saw and hated called "Lights Out". Wan may say he was inspired by the old giallo, but I think he must have pulled from this movie too, thinking he could do it better because he's considered an A-lister.

Bonkers ending or not, I simply didn't care enough by that point, and buckets of blood and mindfuckery can't fix everything. Fortunately for me and unfortunately for my (lack of) integrity, I can't give this movie another shot because my HBO Max subscription ran out yesterday.

I think some of it yes. Especially the scenes in the police department. I loved how over the top it was emoticon I'll ask Troma to give his thought on that too.

Just watched it. If any consolation, I pretty much agree with you on everything you said.

Glad to see I'm not the only one who found this to be a negative example of modern horror.

I just (finally) watched it. I can see why you say the things you do... I am not sure if I like it or not, I might watch it again sometime. But, I will say, I think they probably had to decide whether to call it a straight horror movie, or a horror/comedy. It seemed like several of the actors were having just a little too much fun with various lines, various scenes, and with the whole general idea of the movie. It wasn't really in-your-face, but I felt like a lot of the movie was very close to comedy. And then at the end, they just completely cut loose and made it as over-the-top as humanly possible, and it's just hard not to chuckle a little at that.

Other thoughts... I could have sworn they had Nine Inch Nails doing parts of the soundtrack. IMDB says no, but if you ever watch it again (unlikely, I know) see if you can hear what I'm talking about. Maybe it means something, if I'm even right.

Wikipedia says it was partly inspired by the story of Edward Mordake, or Mordrake, who supposedly actually had a face like the one in the movie. I think that that story is almost certainly a load of BS, but it's still entertaining to think about. We had a copy of the original The Book of Lists in my house, when I was a kid, and I remember reading about Edward M in it. That whole book is packed with BS and they claim it's all real, so, yah.

I guess I agree with onyx too, because U did find it entertaining, although I see what your problems with it are.

Choose, Tommix, you spineless worm! Make up your damn mind! Sorry, had a little schizo moment there... I suppose that shouldn't be too astonishing, considering the movie I just watched.

Anyway, I just suspect that it was meant to be entertaining more than purely terrifying. A little like Drag Me to Hell, maybe? If you are open to its sense of humor, maybe it would be more enjoyable. Or perhaps not.

Love the atmosphere, dragged for a while but redeemed itself pretty nicely with badass kills and all around creepiness. Sorry. Malignant good! 7/10

God dammit, I keep thinking about this movie now. I think I dreamed about it last night.

I just wanted to say, the sense of humor that I THINK James Wan was trying to evoke made me think of Raising Cain, and maybe some parts of Darkman. Just in the sense of the sudden bursts of extreme horror, sandwiched between fairly normal, even boring segments of the movie. I also kept thinking of Soth Park. You know how sometimes South Park mocks the little sentimental moments they have on some TV shows and TV movie? They usually have sentimental piano music in the background, and the characters will divulge some kind of personal tribulation that they have been struggling with. They used to do that all the time, I'm not sure if they stil do. Anyway, that was one of the things that tipped me off that Wan might be shooting for some kind of parody with this movie. The way he did little emotional moments for the characters just felt more like he was showing us what we always expect movies like this to show, rather than actually trying to make us feel for the characters. Now that I have clicked around and read a few reviews, and watched the Chris Stuckmann review of Malignant, I can see argumants for describing the movie as parody, or "camp".... some scenes are definitely so extreme that they could be called camp, but plenty of other scenes are at least a little parody-ish. OK, I now return you to your regularly scheduled life. /rant
