I'm watching The Untouchables and it's great. There's that whole bit with the baby carriage falling down the stairs, the camera angles, the pacing, etc. He always has that one long tense scene in his movies and nobody does that anymore. Where's our new Hitchcock? Where are our masters of suspense?

Of course, I'm referring to a select output of his filmography. I think I quit after Carlito's Way, his last great movie, cuz Mission Impossible and Black Dalia sucked. I still think he's essential to any aspiring film snob.

What's your fave?

He is one of those directors for me that I like just about everything he does that I have seen. Even though he is much like Tarantino where he rips off/homages everything. I thought Mission Impossible was excellent. Black Dahlia didn't live up to its potential but I thought it was still ok. I even like Femme Fatale, Bonfire of the Vanities, and Snake Eyes which weren'treceived well. The only movie of his that I have seen that I really disliked was Redacted. I haven't seen the few movies he made beyond that.

My favorites of his though are Body Double, Blow Out, Phantom of Paradise, Scarface, Casualties of War, Untouchables, Carrie, and Dressed to Kill.

Honorable mention to Sisters and The Fury as well.

I haven't seen The Fury yet, but it's old De Palma, so it's probably good. I think my top few would be Carlito's Way, Casualties of War, and Carrie. All the best ones start with a C.

I would agree with this except The Untouchables and Scarface don't begin with a C.

Again, both great, but I still think the others pack a greater punch. I'll always hold Carlito above Scarface, and I'll never know why people scoff at the idea.

To be honest, I probably prefer Carlito to Scarface too, by a sliver so you'll not get scoffed at by me.

Ranked:
1. Carrie
2. Casulties of War
3. The Untouchables
4. Carlito's Way
5. Scarface

We're on the same page. I find his suspense scenes interesting from a technical perspective, so I might binge a few more of his movies now that I can use my blu player again. I own about a dozen of his flicks. Regular dvds though.

Supposedly The Fury was a big inspiration to Stephen King, when he wrote Firestarter.

So is it about mutants? Firestarter was okay at best. Not particularly my favorite, though I did enjoy Hearts in Atlantis, which was also about the government trying to capture special individuals.

Yeah, the mutants, and also the whole thing about a super-secret division of the government conducting heinous experiments on unknowing subjects without their consent or understanding. That's a really common trope now, but I guess The Fury was a pretty early example of it.

There's a lot of his movies I haven't seen. I haven't seen Scarface, The Untouchables or Carlito's Way. I saw Sisters and Phantom of the Paradise, but so long ago I really need to see them again. I didn't like Dressed to Kill but that was also a long time ago. I'd be willing to re-evaluate that one, especially since it's almost universally praised (even by my dad who didn't like scary movies). Carrie was good but a little slow-moving and I really didn't think the multiple screen images (a technique he uses a lot) in the finale worked in this one.

I like Body Double a lot. The house in this movie, the one that the Craig Wasson character stayed in, was designed by the father of a girl my mother knew in school. He was an architect who was a student of Frank Lloyd Wright, and he went to California and built several things. I didn't know this when I first saw the movie, but found out later. This is one of the better rip-offs of Rear Window, and there have been many.

Of the ones I've seen, I think I like The Fury best. It was a good story, it had lots of suspense, a good cast, and even some comedy. The ending was perfect, and in my opinion the multiple screen device was far more effective here than it was in Carrie. It also had what I think were the screen debuts of future stars Dennis Franz and Jim Belushi.

I also liked Blow Out when I saw it, but have never seen it again. Is it just me, or are most of De Palma's films hard to get even on DVD? Blow Out I know is notoriously rare, but I have never heard of a Blu-ray release of The Fury, Dressed to Kill, or Body Double. I think there were Blu-ray releases of Phantom of the Paradise and Carrie. Is there a reason so few of his films are widely available?

The Fury is one of the few I haven't seen, because it IS that rare and I could never find it on dvd. I had to search pretty hard for Blow Out because that was OOP for a while, and it took me a while to find Body Double too, so yeah. His stuff can be a bit hard to find, except for the super mainstream stuff like Scarface. I thought everyone had seen that one at the very least.

I liked his early stuff enough, Carrie and Dody Double being standouts but after Carlito's Way he kinda went downhill imo. Snake Eyes was terrible, even Nick Cage couldn't save that pos.

I never saw Snake Eyes, but I feel like the post-1994 sentiments sucking are accurate. I didn't like Mission Impossible or Black Dahlia at all. In fact, I didn't like Mission Impossible so much that I've never seen any of the sequels. Then again, I'm also pretty behind on my current Bond lore.
