In retrospect, I cannot take them seriously. However, in retrospect is the only knowledge I have of this year's categories, because I didn't watch the Oscars, nor do I feel as though I should have. Hollywood continues its descent into a dying cliche every time a movie producer tries to play it safe and go the route that makes the most money, but art isn't about the money. It's about the effect that the art leaves with you, and (like many large organizations) the Academy Awards lean towards politically correct films and themes. Now, a movie doesn't need trashy subject matter for me to appreciate it... but it helps.

Have I seen even half of this year's winning films? No. No, I have not seen Gravity. In fact, the only movie I saw was Dallas Buyer's Club, because it was all about AIDS, transvestites, and most importantly, Mathew McConaughey as a redneck. It's legitimately a good movie too, and I really enjoyed it, but most of the nominees this year don't draw me in at all.

I feel as though horror, exploitation, and cult films and interests can have their own entire awards, hosted here, on this site. Users would simply submit their nominations, and vote. The Trash Awards could cover film, television, music, literature, and even people awards. Mainstream nominations would be allowed, but independent projects would be encouraged.

Let's make our own annual awards, here on Trash Epics.

I couldn't care less what Hollywood thinks of their own movies. The Oscars is just a way for the bigwigs in Hollywood to jerk each other off. I don't know much about what won this year and I doubt I've seen any of them. I've heard of 'Gravity' and 'Dallas Buyer's Club', of course, but I'll probably only see the latter and pretty much for the same reasons you listed.

I like the idea of the Trash Awards though. Anything allowed while focusing on the stuff that Hollywood ignores. Also would be a good way to spread info about flicks that maybe aren't so well-known even among trash fans.

I think that's a pretty solid list to start with. One suggestion that comes to mind is a suggestion for novels. I don't read much myself, but I'm sure there's plenty of worthwhile stuff out there each year. Maybe a couple categories for it like 'Best Author' and 'Best Novel'?

My other suggestion is one for companies that release DVDs/Blu-rays. Not sure what it could be called, but there could be categories like 'Best Cover Art', 'Best Extras', 'Best Release Company', 'Best Release'. Something like that. Of course, Shout! Factory and their releases would probably win each category there these days...

One more idea for the 'Film' section. Perhaps a 'Best Soundtrack' catergory?

True dat. It all sounds like the same old generic junk now. The most recent thing that I can think of at all that had a recognizable score was Dexter, but most of that was recorded back when the show first started, so it's really not that recent at all.

I wouldn't object to helping with that. Info as far as simple stuff like titles, years, etc. would be easy enough to build up I think with even just three or four people working on it.

On the subject of both your movie database and user-made shorts, will the shorts be a part of the database as well? If not, I think they should. Both because of your idea to integrate the awards into the database and because it'd be easier to keep track of such films as they disappear under newer posts. You could even provide a link to the shorts on YouTube on their individual database pages, so curious people don't have to dig if they're curious.

Yes, you have your tags system, but that's not helpful to someone who's looking for something to watch and doesn't know the names of any of the shorts. And to help with that on the database, if you're going to allow movies to be sorted by genre, any user-made shorts could be assigned with "user-made" or something simple like that.

I think that's a fine idea, to merge genre categories into tags. Well, I guess the best place to start with the database will be with our own DVD lists. The few users here now combined alone would be able cover a decent amount of what needs to be in the database I think.
