A few days ago, it premiered on-demand. That's right... this glorious bastard didn't even get mainstream theater treatment, because it's that kind of movie.

Directed by French-extremists Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury, this movie is definitely violent, and takes it takes you all over the place, from homestead havoc, to mental asylum madness, to deranged road trip hijinx, and back to regular ol' Texas Chainsaw Massacres.

It ain't perfect. The movie looks like a nasty piece of celluloid, trying to capture that color-scheme and dreary sunburned orange of the original, but it never really surpasses it. The characters are just about all there, including their cliches, and if you like the series... you should be happy with it.

The performances are all pretty solid. Stephen Dorff plays a Sheriff Wydell type, and those familiar with Netflix/Marvel will recognize Finn Jones in there. Iron Fist. He ain't so tough in here though, playing a rather throwaway cop.

Maybe it is violent. Maybe it is moody. Maybe it appears like a fitting entry to the series, but maybe it's just milking a dry cow. Tobe Hooper produced this. This is the last of the chainsaw films he'll have been involved with. I guess all these directors come full circle toward the end of their careers. I can't complain.

Looking forward to this. I really needed Leatherface's origins detailed, just like I needed the originals of the xenomorphs from Alien explained to me. Fuck mystery and the unexplained! We need back stories for everything.

Nice! I be watching that once October arrives. I'm past the point of expecting anything great from the TCM series, but hopefully, it'll be at least a little enjoyable.

Well, I've been thinking about this movie, and I kind of want to watch it again. That could be a good thing. This movie does cover a lot of TCM ground, but my main issue was how unnecessary it seems, if that makes sense. Mostly just because it's a prequel, and we already had a prequel. So now, we just have two prequels that contradict each other (original canon vs remake canon). Basically, if you take it as more of a stand-alone homage to the original, it'll seem a lot better.

That's how I approached 3D before seeing it and turned out I quite liked it. I like it better than 3, TNG and all remakes. When I first heard of it being made, I wondered why they couldn't just let this one franchise alone.

I will pick this new one up on blu as soon as it comes out. It's weird though, seeing these Leatherfaces without a pot belly.

Well, Texas Chainsaw 2013 acted as a direct sequel to the original, even recreating the original home with original cast members. I thought the movie was very entertaining, and very respectful to the original. I'm pretty shocked that so many people strongly dislike it. Maybe it's too pristine for fans of the original, but the new film would definitely remedy that.

The new one is a dirty, violent mess. The new film even explains the pot-belly, but in a sense, the original canon and Platinum Dunes canon seem almost merged with this new entry. It's kind of interesting if you think about it. There are a few parallels, but I wont spoil that here.

Nice! I'm always up for a sequel/prequel that abondons remake canon and goes back to the original.

Somehow, things got even more mixed up for this series than Sleepaway Camp.

Nice. I already plan to rewatch Inside and Livide, and then check out Among the Living for the first time. I may as well chuck this one on the list too.

Have this & the new Chucky lined up for Oct. Didn't mind the 2013 one so should enjoy Leatherface for what it is and not worry too much about canon

it was pretty much as you said, a very violent mostly road movie TCM origins story. liked the mixture of setting and times, and the red herring cought me out. by no means amazing n would maybe work better as a 'making of a nutcase' story outside of the franchise, but certainly worth watching.

i also reconised Finn Jones, he's Robert Englund's plaything in The Last Showing (2014)

interesting point about directors coming full circle, bit worried for John Carpenter now...

It's better than the Texas Chainsaw 3D, that's for sure. I enjoyed it. It may be unnecessary, but the same could be said about all of the sequels/remakes/reboots. The ending was predictable, but really, how else could they end it? SPOILER**********I will say I like this explanation for the mask than the silly one in the remake where it was some skin condition, lame. Also enjoyed seeing Lili Taylor play evil.

Any ways, I don't feel like I wasted my time on it

I thought I read somewhere that it's supposed to be released on regular streaming services later this month. I could be wrong though.

Iโ€™m watching it right now, about 45 minutes into it. So far Iโ€™m not really into it. Feels more like Natural Born Killers to me. Who I assume is teen (not sure yet, maybe he's not) Leatherface has some big olโ€™tits on him.

Well, that was a movie.... Never felt like it was part of the TCM to me. I like the original, and I'm a fan of the remakes, but this one.... No.

For me, it had a strong Natural Born Killers vibe to it, with some Of Mice and Men, Rob Zombie's Halloween, and The Devil's Rejects thrown in. Kept waiting for the big guy to ask if he could pet some rabbits. emoticon

The more I think about it, the more I have to think the director of Leatherface is a fan of Rob Zombie movies.

It had some nice gore in it, but often was so fucking dark you couldn't see anything.

If it didn't try to lay claim as part of the TCM franchise I could rate it maybe a 5. As it claiming to be the new origin of Leatherface, I'd have to give it a 3. Maybe a 4.
