The trailer for the movie looked terribly underwhelming. They wanted to market this as a straight-up horror film, but if you think about it, the original Exorcist was more of a psychological drama for most of the movie. This movie goes for that approach too, meaning that its trailer isn't showing you the movie you end up getting.

What you get is actually a pretty simple story. Two young girls go missing, and their respective families experience some bizarre shenanigans. It takes the legacy sequel approach by bringing back a familiar face or two, but the main idea is pretty concise. I wouldn't say it's very scary, but it is well made. That's what I say about the original, too. It has a few decent creepy moments, and I think it was trying to channel Hereditary a bit, especially by casting Hereditary actress Ann Dowd in yet another spiritual horror character role. I also liked the ending. It's a bit of a twist, both bittersweet and still quite bleak.

For anyone wondering about continuity, nothing in the movie negates the events of Exorcist 2 and 3, and the director confirms that. So none of that garbage where it's a sequel only to the first film, though the first film of course will be the only film they reference, because even I don't remember part 2, and modern audiences shouldn't have to relieve that mess either.

Not a bad flick like I was expecting, but poor box office and reviews tell us we probably wont be getting this turned into a trilogy like they planned. I wasn't terribly attached to that idea anyway. As a stand alone legacy sequel, it works just fine.

I just remember that Exorcist 2 was completely insane, in ways that may have made some kind of sense in the 70s but no longer do. I had that thought because I was recently thinking about another completely insane movie from around the same time: The Manitou. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Manitou

The trailer captures a lot of the dementedness of it, if you're bored enough to watch it:

I see David Gordon Green has quit directing duties. Considering how Halloween got worse with each sequel, that might be a good thing. Maybe he can go and do legacy sequels to Friday the 13th or A Nightmare On Elm Street next. Or how about a legacy sequel to Rosemary's Baby or The Omen. The guy obviously doesn't have a unique idea for a horror movie inside him.

Well, I love him. I enjoyed Righteous Gemstones, I actually just watched Pineapple Express again, and I loved his Halloween trilogy. It's got to be tough to have a trilogy planned, yet need to keep the first entry contained enough in case it doesn't take off. How I see it is that he wanted to homage the original film as much as he could, but for the sequels, you have to subvert expectations and give us something we haven't seen before. And at this point, what haven't we seen? It had to be different, and at this point, it will always be divisive. I see enough references and attention to detail to know that he's a fan of these movies, and it's every horror director's wet dream to get to tackle a classic franchise.

FYI, I purchased the new Exorcist on blu-ray. I like what he did with it.

Watched this last night and I didn't enjoy it much at all. I found it dull and devoid of anything interesting, unlike part III. Of course you have your levitation, your vomiting, your head twisting, your shot of the devil which in this case looked more like the Marilyn Manson character from The Nun. Hell, you even had an opening scene of dogs fighting and a scene reminiscent of the spinal tap scene where the girl "might feel something cold and uncomfortable". It's like the director made his own versions of everything memorable about the original. And how they treated Ellen Burnstyn's Chris was just insulting (yet another "reference", this time to the infamous use of a cross from the original). Well let's hope she got paid well for it. And lines like when one of the girls asks mockingly "does the power of Christ compel you?!" were just plain cringe. I found the whole Avengers Assemble finale unintentionally amusing.

The only thing I appreciated was yeah, it was well made and shot, and the actor who played the dad was pretty good. I'm sure he'll go on to do better things.

Anyway sorry to bang on about your gore ratings again but how does this get the same gore rating as Thanksgiving? That movie had significantly more graphic gore in it. This had barely any gore in it, except for the aforentioned scene involving a destroyed legacy character.

I know that's supposed to be funny but it's not. At all. You're a piece of shit and I hope you die soon.

This movie has balls. Bringing back a legacy character just to stab her eyes out?! And I really love that ending where they send a little innocent girl to hell. These days, it's (still) all about subverting expectations, like with how they handled the head spin this time around, or how it's a twofer possession. I think they covered all the bases pretty well.

I think you may be developing a hate boner for David Gordon Green.

There's nothing about subverting expectations by taking numerous scenes or moments from the original and adding some little twist to them. When it's done to the extent that it's done here, it becomes a bit of a joke by the time we have some vertical vomiting.

There was nothing ballsy about doing the character of Chris over like that. Imagine if Laurie had came back to Halloween only to meet a similar fate. It's cheap and it's tacky and done purely for shock value.

I don't quite have a hate boner for him yet but let's see what classic franchise he takes a shit on next.

Wonder Twins activate...the form of a franchise that people love in hopes that it can rekindle the feeling it once had that was original!
