From that wikipedia guy, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_(genre)
The Western is a genre of fiction set in the American frontier and commonly associated with folk tales of the Western United States, particularly the Southwestern United States, as well as Northern Mexico and Western Canada.

The frontier was commonly referred to as the "Old West" or the "Wild West" and depicted in Western media as a sparsely populated hostile region patrolled by cowboys, outlaws, sheriffs, and numerous other stock "gunslinger" characters. Western narratives often concern the gradual attempts to tame the crime-ridden American West using wider themes of justice, freedom, rugged individualism, Manifest Destiny, and the national history and identity of the United States.

Originating in vaquero heritage and Western fiction, the genre popularized the Western lifestyle, country-Western music, and Western wear globally. Throughout the history of the genre, it has seen popular revivals and been incorporated into various subgenres.

But No Country For Old Men is not a western. It is only a crime / drama / thriller. I noticed that Hell or High Water is a western. Why is this?

I see your point but it's sorta how they consider Yellowstone a modern Western, same goes I guess for No Country and Hell or High Water. Tbh, I love Hell or High Water... it's Sheridan's masterpiece imo. If it wasn't for the success of that film we never would have gotten everything he wrote after. It's 1of the best original things Hollywood has made the past 10 years. Everything is a sequel, remake or reboot these days...so fn tired already. You're not wrong though, they are crime dramas more than anything else imo.

Why is Hell or High Water considered a modern Western? Cause there are many parallels involved between the classic American Western and today. Most Westerns are from the period of post Civil War and reconstruction till about post WW1. During this period carpetbaggers from the north and the banks came into the South and basically fleeced the people of their land and farms causing young men coming back from the war to banditry. They became stagecoach, train and bank robbers, all usually property of the North. This is all central to the American Western. In Hell or High Water they resort to bank robbing to pay and stop the banks from seizing the land their families have owned for generations only instead of it being the reconstruction period in the 1870s it's the 2010s post financial housing crisis in which case we can safely say the banks took advantage and fucked a lot of people?

I really wasn't pushing for No Country but more for Hell or High Water but then again your analogies for No Country...Brolin, Javier and Jones makes sense. Javier's air gun is used to "ethically" put down livestock in commercial farming?
