I've been on an organized crime kick lately. For some random reason, I'm finding mafia stuff quite fascinating, so a few crime movies into this binge and I'm finally revisiting The Godfather series.

I first saw them years ago. These movies were always ranked as some of the all-time best, and yeah... I thought they were good enough. Maybe a tad overrated, but whatever. Now I'm watching them again in my contemporary point of view, after I've dissected all the tropes of the genre, and boom. These movies are fire!

I just put on Part 3 to see how off par is is, according to some. I think the first 2 films are more cohesive because they were made in the same era, so a lot of the best ideas were still at play. The definitive mafia movies (Goodfellas is close).

How do you feel about this series? Are you a mafia movie fan?

RoboCop 2 is a step down, but still fun. Part 3 is one of the worst movies of all time. You definitely need to see the first though. A gory satire about corporate america.

Since when do assholes become a deterrent for an entertaining movie? Take a movie like Gutterballs, where that main preppy villain is a despicable human being, but he's so much fun to watch! I think irredeemable characters can be great. I admire their freedom. Yeah, Joe Pesci is a short hot-headed twat, but I still think he's fun to watch.

No, I haven't seen Robocop 2 and 3. I saw the first one 2 or 3 years ago. emoticon

Yeah, I definitely have an appreciation for assholish characters in movies more than most people, I think. Bozo from The Toxic Avenger was comedy gold. Some characters in some movies just piss me off for some reason, although it's rare. Gutterballs can go fuck itself. That's definitely one that gets annoying quick.

And I know Bozo isn't even a good example of what we're talking about as he's too ridiculous and outrageous to be taken seriously, but I can't think of any of the many, many movies with piece of shit characters which I find amusing and/or relate to...

Wait! There's that cunty uncle from Jason Takes Manhattan. I think he used to piss me off, but now I see the humor in him.

He was great. I think a lot of those types of characters are better once you realized how well the actor carries such an asshole character. Certain comedy movies have great foils you love to hate, like John Vernon in Animal House or Killer Klowns, or Shooter McGavin.

Goodfellas Pesci is pretty much a scumbag no matter how you cut it, but he's a little more likable in Casino. I like to hate him in Home Alone too. He always plays a hot-head, so I wonder if that's how he is in real life.

Casino is extremely overrated as is all performances in that film...Except for James Woods, he fucking rules as Lester!

All I really remember is how like 90% of Casino was narrated. Ugh, SHOW, DON'T TELL!

It's funny cause it's playing right now on SHO in the background and the only reason I put it on was because of this thread. I never noticed it before but you're absolutely right concerning the narration.

yeah just looked on IMDB its got 8.2 fwiw I rated it 6/10

Thats the thing its like with certain things just because of who is associated with it it gets an extra point or 2

film: Scorsese +1 points
games: nintendo +1 points
apple product: +1 points

i.e. if a different person or company came out with the exact same product it wouldn't score as highly

You're not missing out on anything imo. While Robocop is a good 80s film I probably find special due to nostalgia, parts 2&3 are utter garbage IMO.

And didn't they make the mistake of making the sequels tamer? I see the third one is PG-13, so, I at least know that one is. Never a good idea.

Eh, I can see how you could like them if when you were a kid you watched em all the time cause they were probably on TV throughout the 90s. The original Robocop had great bad guys that were both sadistic and funny at the same time. In 2 they basically become cartoon characters and just silly. I don't honestly even remember 3 very well, just that it was unwatchable.

robocop is pure 80s. Its like the terminator, I watched both these films heaps back in the 80s on VHS but today they have dated worse than other films from that period.
Sometimes its not good to place films on a pedestaal

just let the memory live in your head

I've said above, I like Robocop...I'm quite fond of it. I don't think it's anywhere as good as Terminator 1 or 2. Tbh I'll rewatch Terminator 3 Rise of the Machines before I revisit Robocop 2 or 3 but that's just me and most probably don't agree with this opinion.

hey robocop is a brilliant film, you wont get any pushback from me on that.
T3 is enjoyable (though partly due to the sexy babe)
Im not even sure if Ive seen robocop 2/3, I would guess no

OK checked no rating for either but WTF would I need to watch those when the vastly superior R.O.T.O.R one of mankinds greatest achievements, I rate it 9/10, robocop is only 8/10 btw

RoboCop 2 is still a decent movie. At least it's rated R and has Peter Weller, which is the most anyone could hope for. Frank Miller also jumped into the writing process, and his RoboCop vs. Terminator comic was a lot of fun, as were the video games.

RoboCop 3 is an abomination. Fuck that movie.

I watched Naked Lunch the other night, that's a wacky Peter Weller flick.

Strange film, I like a film with a bit of subtext but Naked Lunch is a bit ridiculous.
