I've been on an organized crime kick lately. For some random reason, I'm finding mafia stuff quite fascinating, so a few crime movies into this binge and I'm finally revisiting The Godfather series.

I first saw them years ago. These movies were always ranked as some of the all-time best, and yeah... I thought they were good enough. Maybe a tad overrated, but whatever. Now I'm watching them again in my contemporary point of view, after I've dissected all the tropes of the genre, and boom. These movies are fire!

I just put on Part 3 to see how off par is is, according to some. I think the first 2 films are more cohesive because they were made in the same era, so a lot of the best ideas were still at play. The definitive mafia movies (Goodfellas is close).

How do you feel about this series? Are you a mafia movie fan?

I watched that one once, but I don't remember anything about it. I was probably too stoned to pay attention.

Overrated series. The first two are good, but they aren't top 100 material. The third is just okay, even the recut version. Goodfellas is still the definitive mob movie.

I was pretty underwhelmed in that viewing of Godfather 3. I think that may have tainted an otherwise perfect series. I don't think anything would have really worked as a great follow-up. I didn't know there was a recut version, but I doubt it would make much of a difference.

Goodfellas is definitely a faster and more entertaining movie throughout, but in that great old-fashioned era of Hollywood classics, Godfather is a classy flick.

Once you finish Deadwood, you should try Boardwalk Empire. It has a lot of old school mafia/organized crime stuff going on.

I am a fan of theese movies. I would say Godfather 2 is my favorite, but I like both of the first two in the series a lot. I have seen the third one, but not in a long time... I don't really remember too much about it, so I guess I can't say I loved it.

Mean Streets (1973) is another very solid 70s mafia movie! It's more about the lower level guys, just local Italian-American people trying to function in the confluence of the mafia and the Catholic Church. I saw it for the first time in my life within the past year... maybe six or eight months ago. I might have mentioned it here. Anyway, it has Robert De Niro and Harvey Keitel, soooo what more can you ask from a film? I recommend the hell out of it.

I remember really liking Mean Streets, but it's been a long time and I can ony remember a few scenes in it. Mostly "I'm gonna pay him!" and the Carradine squabble in the bar. I'll give it a rewatch soon, because NYC + Scorsese + De Niro = Win.

While both are cinema classics, I'm in the camp of The Godfather Part 2 is a better film than the original. I actually saw Part 3 in cinemas with my Pops when I was around 15?...we both walked outta the theater asking each other, was it me or was that terrible? I tried to rewatch it a few years ago and shut it off midway... it's hot garbage IMO. If we're talking Italian Mafia films, I'd much rather rewatch Goodfellas or Donnie Brasco. Like Tommix mentioned about Mean Streets, Donnie Brasco focuses more on the lower level soldiers. If we're talking Organized Crime/gangster films of any nationality there are a lot of great films. Zed's on point with mentioning Once Upon a Time in America. I believe that's Jennifer Connelly's first credited role in a film. There's a lot of good British gangster films, Guy Ritchie has done it multiple times. I'm not a fan of Daniel Craig as 007 but he kills it in Layer Cake. Legend is ok because of Tom Hardy's performance but the 1990 film The Krays is much better imo. I don't know if Animal Kingdom from Australia would be considered cause it's only about a small immediate family that runs a criminal operation but I can't praise that film enough. They remade it into a show here in the States...more hot garbage.

I think Godfather Part II is the better movie too, but barely. They've both got their merits, and I like the first for actually having Brando and having more than just a cameo of James Caan, but that whole prequel story in 2 with De Niro is great. I think the term "hot garbage" is pretty accurate for Part 3 though. It may have the same ingredients, but it doesn't have the same feel.

Donnie Brasco is a good one with a good cast. No, I will not take off my boots! Boy, Pacino sure was in a lot of great gangster flicks, wasn't he? My favorite of them would probably still be Carlito's Way, which is sort of along the lines of what we're talking about.

I'd seen Layer Cake many years ago and remember not being impressed. This would likely be due to it being amongst a list of drug recs which I enjoyed a lot, so this fell flat after that bunch. I'm actually not well versed in British gangster flicks. Never saw Legend, The Krays, or Animal Kingdom.

Legend is more or less a remake of the earlier film The Krays which is about the Kray twin brothers who basically ran the London criminal underworld from the mid 50s to the late 60s. A lot of famous British bands from the 60s got their first gigs playing in one of their London nightclubs including The Beatles.

So crime does pay! God bless the gangsters for giving us The Beatles. I wonder how much of the entertainment industry is credited to gangster intervention, much like the horse-head subplot in The Godfather where they strong-armed the movie producer to cast that one guy.

I remember hearing about how The Texas Chain Saw Massacre was funded by the mob.

I may recall something like that, so yeah... the mob has definitely proven itself to be a necessity.

Most people will agree that Scarface is better than Carlito's Way. I like 'em both, but I think Carlito is a much more sympathetic character, which gives it a better emotional impact. Plus, that chase scene at the end is one of cinema's best.

Why? I guess cuz I don't care for Mafia movies. I seen and liked Goodfellas, but not a fan of any of the characters as they all come off like a bunch of obnoxious needle dicks who think their guns make them big shots. I'd like to fight Joe Pesci from that movie. Loudmouth little pussy. I'm sure the Godfather trilogy is a breathtaking work of art though.

I seen RoboCop 2 or 3 years ago.
