I was watching Halloween (1978) for the current challenge today. I should have saved it for tonight, but oh well. Anyway, one thing that has always bothered me is the scene where Michael escapes the asylum. How the hell did he know how to drive? I know this has to have been asked before. Am I missing something here?

I was reading up on the Halloween trivia page on IMDb, and it says this:

That Michael Myers could drive a car despite having been committed to an asylum at the age of six inspired many guffaws. The first movie novelization came up with a simple but effective explanation: when Doctor Loomis drove Michael to sanity hearings over the years, Michael simply watched very closely and carefully as Doctor Loomis operated the car. Remember, even if Michael sat in the back seat and there was a screen of bulletproof glass partition, Michael could still look over the Doctor's shoulder without Loomis realizing the significance. Alternatively Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers (1995) provides a retroactive explanation to this question.

Ah! Thank you! Still seems he was a pretty good driver for just watching over the years. Then again I don't really drive, I just aim and hope for the best.

"Maybe someone around here gave him lessons."

A few years back, Adam Green filmed a "deleted scene" where this is explained, with Kane Hodder portraying Michael:

I wonder whoever in his/her right mind would teach a psychopath to drive with the risk of the psycho using the car as a weapon emoticon
Of course it's a movie taking it all with a huge grain of salt.

The period yes, the movie not at all but I think I have expressed my views about it plenty of times.

He probably saw adults drive when he was a kid. Maybe he picked up enough to get by even years later. A stretch, but not the most unrealistic thing to happen in a Halloween film.

Driving is pretty easy.

Is this a common issue people have with the movie?

Fiat is not expensive but I have never driven one.

So you're 89 years old? You're one cool grandpa, question? Do you have to pay extra for WiFi at your nursing home?
