Okay, lets get straight down to it, what horror remakes do you think were better, or at the very least equal to the original ?

Don't worry you won't be burned at the stake for your opinions!!

Here are some remakes that I thought were better, or even decent:

Let the Right One In (2008) (8) V Let Me In (2010) (8) - The English language remake was superb in my opinion. Captured the atmosphere of the original perfectly.

The Woman in Black (1989) (8) V The Woman in Black (2012) (8) - The remake delivers! Both creepy films.

Pet Sematary (1989) (8) V Pet Sematary (2019) (8) - One of the most controversial entries on my list! This is a solid of the original movie, it seeps and drips with gritty bleakness.

The Thing from Another World (1951) (8) V The Thing (1982) (8) - Obvious entry, both brilliant!

Night of the Living Dead (1968) (8) V Night of the Living Dead (1990) (7) - The original is king, but the remake is very decent.

The Fly (1958) (8) V The Fly (1986) (8) - Another obvious choice, both classics, remake shades it for the gore!

Ringu (1998) (8) V The Ring (2002) (7) - The original is superb. The remake was good too. The remake has a 7.1 rating on IMDb after all.

Fright Night (1985) (7) V Fright Night (2011) (7) - Both very entertaining, the remake was much better than expected.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956) (5) V Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) (7) - The remake here is superior. The original never did it for me, oddly enough.

REC (2007) (8) V Quarantine (2008) (7) - Quarantine not quite as strong as the original, but still very good.

The Blob (1958) (6) V The Blob (1988) (7) - Gore prevails!

Maniac (1980) (6) V Maniac (2012) (7) - A Remake that exceeds the original in every way.

Suspiria (1977) (9) V Suspiria (2018) (7) - Not as good as the original but very good.

The Evil Dead (1981) (9) V Evil Dead (2013) (6.5) - No where near as good as the original but I liked its own take of the story.

What remakes did you think were as good or better than the original ?

The Thing (1980)

The Fly (1986)....these two are obvious

The Crazies (2010) is just meh, but it's still better than the original.

I Spit on Your Grave (2010)

The most controversial one I got is probably Child's Play (2019). I wouldn't say it's better, but I liked it just as much as the original.

I seen Child's Play (2019) yesterday..

I liked it! I liked the new doll.. i liked the fact they did their own thing, it was modernized..

It was a lot of fun... plus Aubrey Plaza was hot!

The Thing (1982), The Fly (1986) and Little Shop of Horrors (1986) are all I can think of that are unquestionably better than the originals...

The Hills Have Eyes (2006) was a really solid flick. It's at least as good as the original.

The Fly (1986) is average at best. I prefer Price's original and sequels.

The two adaptations of The Thing don't really have that much in common to each other. Both are very good movies though.

I saw "Let me in" first and thought it was good but when I saw the original Swedish movie I thought that was a lot better.

I prefer Evil Dead remake over the original, more engaging story and characters

I always preferred the Ring remake, while good I find Ringu quite dull.

I spit on your Grave I like both but the remake just a bit more.

Last House on the left: no contest the remake trumps the original for me

The Amityville Horror: I thought the original was pretty awful, the remake wasn't great either but at least more engaging

A Tale of 2 Sisters vs the Uninvited: while maybe not a full remake and Markus is proly wanting to roast me now but I prefer the Uninvited.

Night of the Living Dead remake is decent but I think the original is quite a bit better. Dawn's remake is just terrible and doesn't have much in common with the original.

The Fly remake is ok but I don't like Goldblum's character, he can't ever top Price.

Oh and yes I do prefer the Maniac remake too much more entertaining than the original.

The remake of The Amityville Horror was OK, wasn't bad.

The original Fly movie was great, no doubt, it is just that the remake had more of a punch, a grittiness.

The original Night of the Living Dead is legendary.. the remake was good too, I felt.

Yes, I heard a few people react that way to the original Ring.. I can understand that.

The Last House on the Left (1972) was good, I feel it is a tad overrated if I am honest. I am not a big fan of the remake either though.

I think I Spit on Your Grave (2010) might be the coolest. Mother's Day (2010) is also a pretty great home invasion movie but very different from the original. I also think The Blob (1988) has great effects and is much more entertaining than the 50s version.

While I wouldn't say it's better than the original, I very much love the Texas Chainsaw Massacre from 2003. I was early in my horror infatuation when I first saw this and it fucked me up. It's considered rather tame to most hardcore horror fans, but it has a great dreary mood and R Lee Ermey is fucking fantastic.

I have not seen I Spit on Your Grave (2010), I enjoyed the original.. are the sequels worth watching, in your opinion?

Yeah, I agree about The Blob, the gore of the remake really added to it.

Yes, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) was certainly decent, it was better than I expected.

I Spit is a weird franchise. The first is charming on account of its low-budget dirty crime vibe, but the remake really amps up the threat. The original is actually pretty tame, especially when compared to the remake, which is less cheesy and more squeamishly gross. It's an exceptional version.

Somehow, the sequels to the remake are good too. They follow a slightly alternative formula, but the concept is the same. Part 2 is one old story and part 3 is a mixed bag on account of its overuse of dream sequences to pad out a chunk of the movie. Deja Vu, the recent direct sequel to the original sucked ass though, so in this case, I'd say the remake series is still better than the original canon.
