What a fucking joke. That movie Everything Everywhere All at Once won all the big awards. It was okay at best, but still a convoluted mess of a movie. They only gave it awards because it had Asians and gay people. They really didn't have anything better than that last year?!

I hope someone got slapped.

Top Gun: Maverick was probably the best movie of last year but a movie like that is never going to win Best Picture.

I think Michelle Yeoh deserved her gong, she was the best thing about that movie. I don't think being Asian had anything to do with it as she was sweeping up awards pretty much everywhere else. We've now got to a situation with "wokeness" that even if a Asian or black actor wins and deserves it, it's still going to be considered an award that's only given out to be shown as being "diverse". That's rather problematic. Oh it was also nice to see Jamie Lee Curtis get a gong. She beat Angela Basset.

Was Angela Basset for Black Panther? If so, that movie deserves to lose. Anything Marvel deserves to lose nowadays.

But the real criteria for these awards shows is basically that any non-white gets the priority. Since Top Gun was mostly about white people, it had to lose. I don't see why a movie like that couldn't win otherwise, and I'm not even a fan (of the first, haven't seen the 2nd).

Like I said, I don't believe that Michelle Yeoh was given the award out of "priority" or any kind of favoritism just because she's not white. She thoroughly deserved it. Same as Parasite deserved to win Best Picture few years back. Contrary to your former President's public outcry and denial, they actually do make good movies in Asian countries like South Korea too. Shocking I know. Having said that, I don't deny "wokeness" is creeping into everything these days.

I still thought it was a stupid clusterfuck of a movie. A movie about buttplugging and hot dog fingers and rocks with emotional breakthroughs? Wtf is even going on in this movie? emoticon

I'll have to check out Parasite some year...

It's definitely not for everyone and I didn't like it as much as many people did. But I'd probably watch it again.

I didn't hate it. I just think it's stupid that this weirdo sci-fi/fantasy is the only movie they could muster up. At least Emancipation didn't win! People are getting tired of slavery Oscar-bait movies, and one of those already won years ago despite nobody seeing it. At least people actually saw this movie.

Train to Busan is a really good Asian zombie apocalypse movie, if you're thinking about picking one to watch.

People on Twitter were saying last night that Irish movies should have done MUCH better than they did, at the Oscars. I can't really comment on the geopolitical significance of why Ireland got short shrift, but... I guess I need to do some catching up, on watching recent Irish movies. People really seemed to think they deserved more recognition.

By the way, Daniel Kwan is a local dude, for jimbred and me. He was half of the team that created Everything Everywhere blah blah blah. He grew up and went to high school in the town where I lived when I was a little kid (Westborough, MA), and then went to Emerson college in Boston, which is very close to me. A lot of people we have all heard of went to Emerson... for us here, Joseph Pilato is probably one of the most famous grads.

Hopefully, the forced wokeness caused the ratings to go even lower than last year.

These days, the only reason I know the Oscars even happen is because of all the articles that come out the next day about how they just had their lowest ratings ever.

Of those films nominated for best pic which would you have liked to see win? It was another weak year for film imo. I saw a few of the noms and can say I couldn't see anything else winning. Sure Top Gun Maverick was a fun fan favorite that made 1.5 billion at the Box Office but those films never win best pic. Banshees of Inshiren I liked but that was the most anti-climatic ending to a good film I think I've ever seen. All Quiet on the Western Front was in theatres for a weekend and not put in major theatre chains like AMC/Regal by Netflix. Nobody saw it and shouldn't have been even given the noms due to it. The Oscars have always been political. I'm glad Short Round, Jamie Lee Curtis and a genre film won best pic...that almost never happens. Better than last year when what Coda won? Another film no one saw, won't be remembered and really won for social political reasons imo.

I can't really give my opinion on this. The only movie I watched that was nominated for anything was The Batman. đŸĢ¤ You must have missed JLC and Brendan Fraser also winning big awards. And that movie All Quiet on the Western Front also had some wins.

JLC is the one with the hot dog fingers. She won because she was playing a dyke. And Brendan Fraser's character was also gay in The Whale. And fat, so disabled makes him doubly valid for the win. I hear it is a good movie though, so don't mind my stupid opinions. I thought The Batman was easily better than EEAAO.

I watched The Whale last night and thought it was a really good film. Brendan Fraser really did deserve Best Actor and definitely was his best performance since Gods and Monsters IMO. I always liked Aronofsky as a director with Requiem for a Dream being his best but Pi, Black Swan and The Wrestler also being solid films. Noah was ok at best but Mother! was terrible. The Whale perhaps has put him back on track.

The Whale really has me thinking which for me exemplifies a good film. I should probably start a new post but I've kinda fallen in love with this thread. The story is rather simple which is probably why it wasn't nominated for Best Pic but it's the acting performances that really elevate it. Fraser even with fat suit and make-up which is flawless really is great in it and sells the film. The supporting cast is really solid also, there are no subpar performances in the film. Which got me thinking about Aronofsky, he always gets great performances out of his actors. In Requiem for a Dream, it's easily Jared Leto, Ellen Burstyn and Jenifer Connolly's best parts of their careers. Burstyn was robbed of the Oscar that year due to politics and given instead to Julia Roberts for Erin Brockovich. In The Wrestler it's easily Mickey Rourke's best and the same for Natalie Portman in Black Swan both winning Best Actor and Actress. Anyways it surprised me and I recommend, gonna give it a rewatch soon since I have it on a 2 day rental.
