Directed by some weird German guy, this movie is all over the place. It feels like it's trying to rip-off a lot of things, but it doesn't know quite which one to focus on. I thought it was Italian at first, but it wasn't dubbed enough.
There's some backstory that traumatizes two kids, who resume the rest of the movie as young adults in the "present". Basically, there's a slasher who appears through reflective surfaces. However, John Carradine advises the heroine on how to progress this story, w... Continue »

A happy cruise ship experiences technical difficulties. Probably because it was piloted by that dumb fuck George Kennedy. Only a handful of survivors are left to crawl aboard some abandoned Nazi torture ship from decades ago. And guess what? This ship is haunted!
As the merry band of heroes navigate the ship, it randomly kills them in dumb, psychic ways. It threw Saul Rubinek overboard before he could ever make his war epic Comi... Continue »

The first original Omen from 1976 is a classic. Very ominous and unsettling all the way through, so where do you go next? The second film was a rehash that bears a mild charm, and the third one confused everyone with its disregard for any relevant timeframe. How is Damien born in 1976 an adult in 1981?
Honestly, forget the sequels. Although part 4 is mildly amusing and apparently a heavy influence on a plot thread of this movie, but ask most people and they'll agree, "... Continue »

I find that as I get closer to a mid-life crisis, the more juvenile I seem to be getting. All I've been doing this month is watching kiddie cartoons like TMNT '87 and thinking about costumes and action figures.
I think the NECA toys are really cool. A lot of attention to detail. So far, I have: Phantom of the Opera, Frankenstein, Gill-Man, H2 Michael Myers, Dr. Loomis, and Ghostface. I shouldn't waste my money on these things,... Continue »

I haven't posted in a while, but here is my latest useless contribution. I watched Reign. It was like someone took the dragons, etc... and excitement out of Game of Thrones and replaced it with feminism. I don't know why I finished the series, but I did and it was not good, but I for some reason liked it.

I was skeptical about this one. Not only was I not impressed with the character in Fury Road, but 2.5 hours long? Sheesh. Theaters booted it quickly for some damn reason, so it's probably rubbish, right?
Honestly... it was pretty damn good. The wasteland has never looked better. A visual feast with loads of action that somehow doesn't get boring. Seriously, how can a movie about constant car chases stay entertaining? I don't know, but it does.

This remake is just like the 1990 movie, except there aren't any mutants and it isn't set on Mars.
Wait, what? So instead, we're on Earth and there's a lot of robots and some conspiracy going on. I zoned out a lot in the later half, but I still don't know what the cover-up was. It was much more clear in the original movie, in which Arnold gives one of his most sincere and emotional lines ever:

You don't hear about this one much. The original is a classic of its era and sets a high standard. Apparently, the 80s version was good enough to last 3 seasons. Then we have a 2002 version hosted by Forest Whitaker. This only lasted 1 season, 22 episodes, 2 segments (20ish minutes each) per episode. They canceled it.
Honestly, this was such a pleasant surprise, though. Most anthology shows have plenty of dud episodes, but I really enjoyed most all of these episodes. And so many guest stars, to... Continue »

Who thought this was ever going to happen? They were talking about it for years and years, I wrote it off as a pipe dream. But here we are, 36 years later, and they finally did it. They made Tim Burton great again.
The first movie is great. Weird as hell, original, and a promising start for Tim Burton. He channeled his filmmaking process at that time to make a very practical effects oriented movie. Finally, a Tim Burton movie with very little CGI. The story is a lot of fun, too.

Starring Bruce Campbell and Angus Scrimm! With KNB effects! When I saw that cast and crew, I didn't even read the synopsis. I simply turned it on, thinking I would be in for a good time, but...
This movie was so unengaging. It didn't get me invested at all. There are a few good effects moments, but otherwise, this movie was a big letdown. At least Bruce Campbell screams a lot. It's always fun hearing him in pain.

I was getting desperate for a 'Y' movie, so I settled on the first one I could find. I've been on a Chazz Palminteri kick, and this one places him as a gambler trying to scam the casinos for a big win with the help from his wife.
Now things take a more personal/domestic turn when Chazz's son drops by, having been kicked out of his group home because he's a down syndrome guy with violent/inappropriate tendencies. So the movie is Chazz trying to reconcile things with this son of his, who can ra... Continue »

Does anyone know if there is a way to tell when the second showing of Stranger in Our House was? This was the made for TV witch movie with Linda Blair and directed by Wes Craven. It premiered on October 31, 1978 (same night as Devil Dog: The Hound of Hell on a different network). I didn't see it then, but it was rerun some time later, I think probably in the summer or fall of '79. That's when I saw it. I'm trying to determine the exact date because it was the same day as soemthing else that... Continue »

This is a good mid-80s NYC period piece following a bunch of juvenile delinquents. It switches between 1986 and the present, as recollected by Robert Downey Jr.
The setting is wonderful. The whole thing is beautifully made and the cast nails it. The crude teens harrassing everybody in town is a lot of fun to me. It's like Kids, where the teens are getting drunk and suffering adolescent melodrama. Shia LeBeauf is among the teens, mostly a spectator rather than instigator to the gang vio... Continue »

When I heard this was to be set between the first two movies, I wondered how the hell that was going to work. So here's the setup: The company sends a ship to gather some space junk from the Nostromo wreckage. Guess what kind of space junk they find?
But we're not dealing with them. We're dealing with a group of young people on a mining colony planet, and like most young people, they don't want to work. They form a plan to steal some cryo tubes from the wreckage of the ship that went out to g... Continue »

Released 50 years ago in October.
I first saw the '74 original when it was around 30 years old. It always seemed so old back then, almost like it was part of Texas culture. Before I moved to TX, I'd often imagine that any farmland or field probably had a hidden chainsaw psycho in there, like ol' Bubba. The film's title alone is enough to tell you that this movie is going to be different than anything you've seen before. And none of the sequels since can even top it.

I haven't seen this film in nearly 20 years, so it was time to re-evaluate.
Dee Snider plays Carlton Hendricks, who goes by the username "CaptHowdy". He's a sadist and online predator luring teen girls to his lair where he sews their mouths shut and puts them in weird sex/trap devices.
What sets him apart from others is that his aim isn't to kill people. He just loves to torture them. What a fucking asshole, but Dee makes it w... Continue »

I'd just like to say, this film has a VERY strong opening. Very, very strong. Basically the first five or ten seconds after the opening credits and montage, immediately after the Zombies classic song Time of the Season for Loving finishes playing. It's just one hell of a solid scene. That's all I'm saying.

Some of us here must know this already, but if I ever knew it I had completely forgotten about it. In chapter 50, on page 650 of my copy of the expanded edition of The Stand, there is a scene where Mother Abagail (that's how she spells it) reminisces about a vacuum cleaner salesman named Donald King! It says she met him back in the 1930s. That is definitely a reference to SKs dad, Donald King, who sold vacuum cleaners. So cool. Had to share.

A weird thing happened in the world lately. And by the world, I mean what goes on in my head. Kristen Stewart, the chick from Twilight, who I've never found attractive previously, suddenly became hot. And not in the usual way. She became hot when she became... dykey. She used to be awkwardly gawky and lean in a bad way; the kind of lame faux-punk chick that losers who listen to Green Day go for. Now she's pooning women all over the place, got a hardass "men are scum" look in her eye and i... Continue »

Here's an instance where a movie has a perfect trailer. It sets up the plot that the FBI set up a sting at a pop concert to catch a serial killer. That's all you get out the trailer, and that's perfect. We don't want to ruin the suspense and the M. Night twist by yabbering on about the details, but the end result is this: This movie is crispy! Extra fried!
M. Night delivers what may be my favorite of his films thus far. That's not saying much since he's so hit or miss, but this one is a home r... Continue »

You guys, I just saw a clip from a movie called Shirley, about Shirley Chisholm. It looks like Lance Reddick had a pretty substantial role in it! I'm not 100% sure that that is true, but it sure looked like he had a really important role, from what I saw.

That isn't necessarily a movie that all of us would immediately rush out to see, but I am going to try to watch it just for the pleasure of seeing Lance R. He was so awesome. This is o... Continue »

Good flick. Great cast. Brian Cox is out fishing when three teens hassle him and do something quite wicked. The rest is him trying to get justice while the parents of the evil boys try to sweep it under the rug.
Jack Kechum movies are always pretty twisted. This one isn't as disturbing as his later ones, but it's still very good. A cruel movie, and Brian Cox plays it real cool. I love that guy, one of those forever-old types.
