Holy hell, this movie was creepy as fuck! It gave me goosebumps, several times. Disgusting imagery, slow-burning fuckery, and some serious chills. There are so many paranormal jump scare movies out there that are total wank, but this one didn't have those dumb jump scares. This one wasn't paranormal so much as it was satanic, and I'm very happy that a theatrical horror film could frighten me so much.

I never saw any of the Paranormal Activity movies, so I mostly compare it to Rosemary's Baby with some Exorcist imagery thrown in the mix. A late night viewing is bound to creep you out. I used to walk to work at 3AM when it was dark and creepy outside, and I'd always imagine that fat naked smiling dude watching me in the shadows.

Angry Video Game Nerd did his review on this a few years back and said pretty definitively that this was the scariest movie he's ever seen. I'll agree with that, and it still holds up on repeat viewings. Midsommar, however, does not. That movie was pretty dreadful the second time around, and I didn't even watch the super-long extended cut. Why would such a cut exist?!

I can't say your opinion surprises me. Is there an example of a modern horror movie you DO like?

I've never viewed The Exorcist as a scary movie, but I do think it is a very good movie. Religious stuff doesn't affect me so much to begin with, but I still think movies like Exorcist, Rosemary, Omen, and Hereditary are very good and classy.
