So I was rewatching one of my favorite comedies Freddy Got Fingered once again and something occurred to me whilst doing so.

Is Freddy Got Fingered a Dada Masterpiece or simply a low brow comedy with a niche audience?

There are many elements of this film I feel are clearly stating something about repressed behaviour and acting socially acceptable. Exploration of the Id and acting out on it. Which in real life we mostly never do. There is a similar appeal in horror movies.

There has to be something to it because I have zero interest in comedy movies from the same era of late 90's and early 2000's such as There's Something About Mary and American Pie. Even back when they were released.

Yet I remember and enjoy Freddy Got Fingered to this day.

I think the difference with this movie is that I laugh directly at the movie and how it came to be.

It really does get me laughing a lot.

It's ahead of its time for sure. It really seemed like Tom Green was intentionally fucking with the audience and possibly trolling film critics. He even proudly accepted his razzie award.

It definitely feels like a precursor to the type of humor you could find in internet trolling.

did you see RLM's recent retrospective on it?

i saw the movie just once when it came out on video and honestly didn't pay much attention to it. though it had some funny stuff i mostly wrote it off as a stnker. i'm curious now to revisit it with a touch more analysis.

Yeah, I'm pretty much done with shit from this era, too. The Jay And Silent Bobs, Next Friday, Adan Sandler and all that garbage. And I'd say the same for this movie and Tom Green in general, but there is some genius underneath this clusterfuck. I sitll appreciate a scenario where Rip Torn is Tom Green's abusive father and Finch is his more successful and well adjusted little brother. That's good stuff. This movie definitely needed to happen and '01 was a good time for it cuz no fucking way was Tom Green ever going to stay relevant for more than a few years.

Pure fried gold trash IMO. Another comedy that don't get any sort of respect from around that time is Saving Silverman.

Saving Silverman is one of my favorites. I watched that a bunch when I was younger. PG-13 cut, then I replaced it with the R cut.

R. Lee Ermey? Neil Diamond? Plenty of quotes and surprisingly fun sense of humor? Arbys product placement! Diamonds in the Rough!

I thought his ass looked tighter!

"What about you? When are you gonna get hitched?"
"I'm not. I'm gay."
"...me too."

We ate her! Alive.

We have ghosts.

Also, did I mention that I was gay?

You were correct in saying it's such a quotable film.

I haven't been able to get this movie out of my mind since you posted this and I just had to watch it again. It's even funnier than I remembered. It's totally underrated. The only thing I can figure for the massive hatred it got was that people were just offended. I have to admit, when I first saw it when I was about 15 I actually found it pretty disturbing.
