We can all agree that the Jason costume and make up in this movie is probably the best or amongst the best in the series.

The final fight between Jason and Tina is fantastic. Whilst Kane Hodder's presence as Jason is also great.

The thing is, everything before Jason and Tina fighting is really bad, when I rewatch the movie I feel like i'm watching a true dud of the series. Apart from one or two kills like the sleeping bag or the nudey girl in the lake that copies the opening of Jaws, it's only the above mentioned elements that save it by the end.

What do others think of this movie?

I'm not a fan. At this point in the series, the formula was getting stale and I think they knew it, hence the Carrie gimmick for Tina. Wasn't enough of a change though.

I agree though that the make up and effects are solid. Always liked when Tina starts to tighten Jason's mask, right before his face is revealed, and all that pus starts oozing out around the edges of the mask's straps.

I believe a lot of it came with the MPAA, who was particular harsh on demanding cuts for the film. They even omitted kills and characters entirely. A lot of the movie is pretty stupid, but like most entries in the series, it's still fun. Kane is the coolest. The end is really stupid though. How did her father not decompose after all those years under the shallow fucking lake? I guess we're meant to take that as just another illusion / dream ending, but it's pretty stupid, if you ask me.

I guess they originally filmed it with the father looking as decomposed and rotten as you'd expect, but for some reason the producers wanted that changed to the ending we got.

it's maybe my second favorite of the series. but i'm not really much of a fan of the series in the first place.

This is actually my favorite of the series. I absolutely LOVE the fight between Jason and Tina, and it's the first time we see Kane Hodder as Jason! He managed to give Jason a personality. I do think the violence was extremely toned down and that's a shame. True it has its silly moments, but don't they all? A prime example of that being Jason X, which I enjoy as well. Hell, I pretty much like all of them.

Some time ago I saw a fan edit that put the nearly two minutes of cut gore back in. That version is pretty darned righteous. Otherwise, yeah, quality make up but film not up to much other than the final fight. The general editing of the sequels makes me not bother with rewatching most at all these days though. Missing gore plus not that interesting in general as far as the slasher genre goes equals not that worthwhile to me.
