Halloween (2018)

Laurie Strode confronts her long-time foe Michael Myers, the masked figure who has haunted her since she narrowly escaped his killing spree on Halloween night four decades ago. The intro scene is underwhelming, and the theme song is adapted to a less creepy version, meaning that the opening 10 minutes feel flat. Most of the protagonists are obnoxious twits, especially the two journalist dweebs who are totally unlikeable. The first 30 minutes are just dull setup. There are also too many scenes that are structured to mirror the original, which was distracting. The score is neutered to be limp and ineffective, which means that John Carpenter should just retire at this point. It fails to take its time to capture the Halloween holiday atmosphere, and it also fails to set up the characters or the scares properly, which means that it feels rushed even when nothing interesting is happening.

This movie just goes thru the motions and does nothing to distinguish itself or be memorable in any way. The long finale is surprisingly tedious. The comic relief is atrocious. Thereโ€™s a plot twist near the end that is incomprehensibly stupid. On a positive note, a few of the death scenes are pretty good, but I will happily re-watch the much-maligned โ€œHalloween 6โ€ over this one, any day of the week.

I kind of agree with you on the pacing. On the other hand, I do imagine how hard it would be to craft a story that's simple enough to get the ball rolling.

It's one of those homage type movies that does a lot of the right things, but people still end up hating it sometimes. Like 2013's "Texas Chainsaw". Nobody likes that movie apparently, but I thought it was fun, while being respectful to the original.

H6 producers cut is where it's at. The music is less distracting, the kills aren't over the top, and the vibe is better. It feels like a proper sequel, but the plot is too bizarre at that point. The new movie had an energy to it that worked for me. Michael and Laurie have that whole 'fate' thing going, which influences the story into something more traditional. This movie is basically a love letter to the original Halloween, with sprinkles of the sequels throughout.

I guess I liked it a bit more than you did. I agree the music was not as effective, and it makes the overall atmosphere of the movie seem definitely less creepy than the original.

I didn't like the intro scene much but overall I did not find the first 30 minutes to be dull. It had a good energy about it, and throughout.

There were some good death scenes but I found most of them to be fairly predictable.

I didn't notice much, if any thing in the way of comic relief so yeah it must have been pretty ineffective.

I like how modern horror always has to deal with the issue of the mobile phone and why a characater does not possess one. This example was pretty lame..

Still, it was better than I thought it was going to be, and it is definitely better than Rob Zombie's remake and sequel.

Well that doesn't sound too different from the original does it? But heck what I do I know I'm just a barbarian who doesn't care for that classic.

Honest trailers drag on too long. 6 minutes for a trailer is hardly a trailer, but more of a short film that gives everything away. I've seen a few of them, and I can't get into them.

They're fine if you've already seen the movie but yeah I would not recommend watching them to someone who wants to see the movie. Some of them are very funny, more so for the films that are known to be bad.. pity you cannot get into them. I don't think 5-6 minutes for what is basically a piss take is too long at all.

I know these videos are supposed to be jokes, but my beef goes for actual trailers, too. Most trailers give away far too much, leaving no stone unturned. I prefer vague trailers, and that's something that really wouldn't work with Honest Trailer's nitpicking style of being a review, rather than a trailer.

The art of a good trailer is lost on today's audience.

You're right, it's basically a mini-review that points out all the flaws in a movie but in an often very amusing way. The Happening is the funniest one they've done.

I agree with you on real trailers too. I've tried to stop watching most trailers for horror movies for that very reason. They always end up showing the biggest jump scare or the "scariest" part of the movie at the very end, so when you come to watch the actual movie you already know what to expect at some point. Trouble is, film companies probably think that vague trailers will not entice an audience to want to watch it..

I've seen The Happening's honest trailer, only because I haven't seen that movie and have no interest in it. Looks like a shitty movie. Whalberg: "What? No!"

I tend to get more interested in movies where the trailer doesn't show anything, and tries to get you on the hype-wagon rather, by showing you creepy vibes and otherwise very little actual footage. I know modern audiences are dumb, but I don't think they're dumb enough that vague trailers would be lost on them.

TV spots are more effective for that very reason. I try to stick to those and when the official trailer comes out, I do my best to avoid it.

It was good but keeping him in a mental institution for 40 years and ignoring the sequels and thus a large portion of his kills robbed Michael of some of his notoriety.
