How did you like Cat People and Fiend without a Face? I love these. Baby Jane is good too.

Glad you liked Mr. Sardonicus that much. I also like that one a lot. I would rate the Lodger higher even though not among my favorite silents. I'm planning on watching the 40s version for this challenge and also the 30s version of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (yeah only saw the silents from these movies).
Have you seen the original Hunchback of Notre Dame? That's among my favorite silents so I'm holding back on watching remakes. But there is many more I like. The Cat and the Canary and The Bat are movies I woud never get tired of, so at least one of them will get a re-watch this month.

I'm sometimes a bit cautious to watch remake when the original is a silent. Like I said I love the original "The Cat and the Canary" (definitely among my favorite dark house movies and I do think it's many times better than the popular Old Dark House with Karlof but that's personal preference) and I was really disappointed with the remake from the 30s with Bob Hope. That's a bit the problem with talkie remakes of silents, sometimes too much dialogue. IN the original of Cat and Canary the images mostly told the story while the remake dumbed it down with some changes I didn't like (especially replacing the creepy Mammy Pleasant). Also so much more talking that I was like ah shut up for a minute. It really took away the creepy atmosphere. I guess entering the talkie era some movie makers went a bit in overkill modus on the spoken dialogues whereas in silent era they tried to keep the written texts to a minimum (if not the movie would tire one out) and much more focus on the action, expressions, gestures etc.

Ok the original Lodger might not be the finest example of movie making with the strongest plot but there is already flashes of Hitchcock's techniques to create tension. These shots to make the Lodger the suspect they are suble. I just hope the remake doesn't go in overkill dialogue too.
So yes I love silents, they remain to the point, talkies sometimes have a tendency to give too much information that isn't important for the viewer mainly serving as filler. So yeah cledarly I'm no fan of very dialogue driven movies emoticon

No I was talking about The Cat and the Canary from 1939, the first remake:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cat_and_the_Canary_(1939_film)

Not a bad movie but the focus lies too much on the comedy and not enough on horror. Surely the original from 1927 has it's comical moments too but still the visuals make it overall for a creepy atmospheric movie also thx to the way the movie is filmed. There is that constant darkness as the whole story takes place during night. Also the appearance of housemaid Mommy Pleasant is enough to cause shivers.

I hope they have not made the 1930s version of Jekyll and Hyde too light (hearted). The silent one from 1920 might not have been that good but at least it had some truly creepy and horrifying images.

I have just seen The 40s Lodger. While certainly not a bad film but bar the Lodger being creepy I think the original is in every way superior to it. I do like they they didn't copy the original even though they kept quite a few elements on it. However the problem I had was that it was rather obvious who the killer was and the viewer keeps getting clues that the other characters conveniently miss with only the landlady being suspicious. Also I figured out the motive of the killer before he could tell it. I kept hoping for a twist (like in the original) even though it was higly unlikable given all the clues. So yes I was proven right. But also on atmosphere and camera work, mimics I think the original was much better. And of course the 'problem' with spoken remakes of silents, too much talk that really doesn't help the story forward.
I know M (1931) didn't have an original silent but it's a high regarded early talkie. Too much talk is a problem but again there is no mystery as you really know very soon who the killer is and he doesn't do that much of an effort to stay invisible, but it still costs them a lot of effort to catch him with a silly trial in the end. Might all be good film making but quite poor mystery and weak story telling.

Queen of Spades was good but a bit too slow for my tastes. I remember Dan loving that one a lot. There is a few 40s movies I like much more such as Cat People and The Beast with Five Fingers (1946). Not sure why the latter is rather obscure.

So far only 1 re-watch which was also the best movie I have seen atm: The Raven (1935)

Best FTV's Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1931) and Cinderella (1914). I still prefer the silent version of Jekyll and Hyde though. The 1931 was (as we discussed before) went a bit overboard on dialogue. Not as atmospheric as other Universal's from a few years later (Frankenstein, Dracula, The Raven, Mad Love). Still nice transformation scenes (good effects and make-up) and a subtle level of eroticism (pre Hayes Code for sure) with a seductive Miriam Hopkins. Cinderella I found fun, short (around 50 minutes) and to the point with some 'magic' effects Mรฉlies style. Seems I'm a fan of movies with a shorter duration than average.

And with Foz convincing me to watch Flesh Eaters together that one is now my best view overall, I already liked it a lot on FTV so matching it will be very hard
