So, I'm watching The Witch for the second time. I kept hearing about how good this movie is, but I just can't really like it. I hate the ending, but what's worse is I can't understand a damn thing the father says ( I keep waiting for him to say I'm Batman with that shit awful voice of his.), and the mother is an annoying cunt. Black Phillip is pretty cool though.emoticon

I like it, but I'm not sure why to be honest. I guess mainly because it's well made.

Definitely a movie to watch with subtitles.

I think it's a good movie. More good than entertaining. It's been a while. I might give it a rewatch soon, myself.

My second viewing had a rare result for me. I went from loving it the first time I saw it, to wondering what the fuck I thought was so great about it. I guess I mainly just found myself bored by it. Black Phillip is undoubtedly the best part.

I don't remember dick about this movie, other than how boring I found it. Sure, it may be well made, but that doesn't make it a good movie. Not at all. Especially when the best part of it is a goddamn goat, who's only cool because of his name.

Right on. I thought I was the only one who thought it was a total snoozefest.

You weren't the only one...after I saw it I couldn't believe people on the HB thought it was the best horror film of 2015.

I liked this one okay, but it wasn't all that memorable imo. I agree the goat was the best part. What was even better though was reading about all the production delays because of the goat's antics on set. You tell em, Philip!

Well when I was sure this was not about some potion brewing nasty witch flying on a broomstick, kissing the devil's arse, eating children and all the other stuff they do in the original fairy tales I gave it a pass.
Quite sad that after Haxan I haven't found a horror movie that came close to the medieval image of the witch. Most of them are set in modern times, about witch hunting (that has nothing to do with witchcraft) or flashy action dumb CGI laser shit like with other stupid elements like Quidditch thrown in like Harry Potter.

Suprised me how much i liked it, went in blind so maybe having no idea or expectations helped. Also it was pitch black & the constant wind & rain sound was really cool. Agree about the Father's accent - it's thick Yorkshire and understandably unintelligible to most outside of the UK.

Can see how people find it a borefest, def slow in parts. Loved the cinematography, esp the landscape shots and how they made the trees look so intimidating. Sound engineering was great, acting was solid, esp Kate Dickie & Anna Taylor-Joy. & yes, Black Phyllis steals the show!

I usually like movies like that, but those things I listed just killed it for me.

I love the atmosphere and the visuals of The Witch. They definitely got the look and the feel of that time period right, but the story is just so dull and unengaging. I almost fell asleep watching it. I could barely understand the father too.

I think it worked great as a history piece, especially for a debut the director did a phenomenal job, the cinematography, the costume design, dialogues, the acting, the setup etc worked very well.

The problem for me was that i watched it without subtitles and i was struggling throughout to understand what they were saying and english not being my first language hindered the experience even more. I am confident i will regard it more highly upon a second viewing w/ subs.
