I remember a time when people who viewed Hollywood mainstream movies looked down on those of us that watched lesser known low budget movies. The kind that would never be shown in a theater and if they were it was probably some back alley or hole in the wall type of place.

Nowadays, it seems at least to me, that the roles have reversed. Those that view the micro low budget movies look down on those that enjoy multi-million dollar mainstream films.

Have any of you noticed this? If so, why do you think it has become this way?

Yeah, they're all dead to me, bunch of simple minded, ass ramming sheep with their Tom Cruises and whatnot. Fuck 'em!

Just kidding. I'm going with the internet on this one. It's changed the way people look at a lot of stuff.

I think these days, there are all sorts of people who like all sorts of types of movies. I hardly think you can classify it as one majority or the other. Sure, mainstream stuff gets all the theatrical releases, so it's shoved down our throats more, but the indie stuff is basically becoming more mainstream as it goes. Stuff like netflix original movies aren't theatrical, but they still get loads of hype now.

I still like some Hollywood movies, but most of them (particularly cgi/action movies) are garbage. I tend to appreciate the lower budget and more obscure stuff more out of principle, because they tend to have more heart.

People who like only one or the other don't provide a good representation of fair, unbiased thoughts. You gotta watch some of both in order to know what you're talking about. Me though? These days, I watch more mainstream stuff than I do low budget stuff, because it's just easier for me to get a hold of. I suck.

I also believe it has to do with the internet. Specifically, the increased accessibility to lesser known low budget movies and means of discussing and critiquing said movies. Now things are on a more even playing field between mainstream movies and indie movies and fans of both.

Basically, I'm not sure the roles of elitist fans have reversed much, it's just that people who prefer indie movies now have an equally loud voice.

What Ballz and Box said mostly.
Both fan groups have now their voice thanks to the internet whcih is the new way of hyping things up. Sure there are people who think their taste is betetr than others but I dunno if I would call that elitist.
With elitist I think more of the arthouse movie fans who look down upon those who cannot understand the beauty of it like me.

Hmmm as far as I can remember its always been this way, mainstream viewers tend to not know of anything else

No, not really. When I first began using the internet, and Scream was still fairly new, I remember anyone who even remotely liked it being mocked and made fun of by more esoteric horror fans into all the obscure, older stuff. It's always, in my experience, been those into niche genres looking down upon anyone who digs an easy breezy mainstream movie.
