Years ago, I read the novel The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson. It is a perfect read for those who enjoy a classic gothic style ghost story. I later found the 1963 movie The Haunting based on the novel. I fell in love with it and it's one I still revisit. I do all I can to forget the 1999 remake, The Haunting. Not even Liam Neeson could save that steaming pile of shit.

When I heard that Netflix was going to have an original series based on the book, I had mixed emotions. Netflix, at least in my opinion, seems to get some pretty bad movies, but it does tend to redeem itself with its original content. So, I tentatively decided to give it a shot. My concern was not only how they would treat the original source material, but it is a horror series, and I had yet to see one that was actually scary. It seems as though all of them tend to come off a little cheesy. Thankfully, this one did it right.

I'll be honest. I can be overly picky at times when it comes to movies or series. No one knows that better than Tromafreak, and he has been nothing but patient with me. I think I'm getting better at being more open-minded when it comes to my viewings nowadays, if I was stubborn as I once was, I would have stopped watching by the third episode. I just wasn't feeling it. However, I decided to keep on and I'm so glad I did. I'm now on episode six of the first season and I am officially hooked! Season 1 consists of 10 episodes and I suggest you be ready for a day of binge-watching!

The plot as stated on IMDB: Flashing between past and present, a fractured family confronts haunting memories of their old home and the terrifying events that drove them from it.

I get it's a bit vague, but trust me. You do not want any spoilers on this horror gem. If you have been searching for a legitimately scary series, or if you are a fan of classic style ghost stories, this is for you. I should also mention this show is directed by Mike Flanagan (Oculus (2013), so, if you are a fan of his work, you'll enjoy this. The Haunting of Hill House is like a breath of fresh air in a stagnant world of paranormal viewings. This is the show that fans of classic style horror have been waiting for. The set designs are some of the prettiest and at times, unsettling that I have ever seen. I am really looking forward to Season 2. If Netflix keeps up this level of quality with their original programming, I might go another year without canceling my subscription. 8/10

Nicko enjoyed this one too, so I will definitely be checking it out soon, probably at start of next month as I doubt I will be watching many turkeys!

I'm glad I stuck with it. First three episodes are a bit slow, but it really starts picking up by the 4th. Has some nice old school creepy visuals too.

I have no idea what I'll watch next month.

Cool, been toying with the idea of whether to watch this or not. Maybe I'll try and get to it this weekend.

I agree that Netflix does feature some pretty good original content. Seems to be their lifeline and what mostly draws people in nowadays, and they know it too.

So long, overly priced cable TV packages.

I hope you do check it out. I'm on episode 9 now and I'm wishing it had more than 10. It's pretty cool that we live in a time where we don't have to rely on just the tv stations for entertainment. TV really doesn't have that much to offer. I think streaming services like Amazon Prime and Netflix are making that more evident each day.

Nicko said he wasn't sure about the ending - that was his only major criticism. Let me know if how you felt (although no spoilers obviously emoticon)..

Sounds good!! Carla Gugino is another actress who I'm glad is famous. I just made another thread about this, how it makes me sick that certain famous people are famous... but Carla G deserves it, I'm glad she's doing well. I'm sure the fact that she involved herself with this project did a lot to improve its quality.

By the way, I was just thinking the other day, I bet Hull House in Night of the Demons was supposed to be a reference to Hill House.

I'm going to watch next month. Flanagan's involvement already had me interested and I'm glad to hear it's a classic style ghost story. Not a fan of most modern paranormal movies.
