Troma and I discussed this recently.

Considering the ending of this movie, is it a slasher film? What about Return to Horror High (1987)?

Sure. Yep. Definitely.

I mean, yeah. It's all a hoax, but for the majority of the film it plays out like any other slasher movie. And even after the big reveal the movie has you second guessing how things'll end with yet another surprise (the fake slit throat). That part creeps me out for some reason.

Yeah, it's just a twist. It undoes everything that happened but we still saw it happen, even if it wasn't real. It still looked just as real as all the other shit like that that was coming out at the time.

I'd count it. I mean, someone had to use this premise for a slasher film, and there's no better twist than that. I guess if you turned it off before the end reveal, you'd never know the difference.

Is Return to Horror High any good?

It's watchable I suppose. Nothing great, just OK. I think the nostalgic memories I have attached to it would make me defend it more than the average person, especially someone seeing it for the first time in 2018.

The cover's great. I think every video store in America had it in their stock at one time.

Definitely. I don't think there is any question.

I think of it as a slasher. If it wasn't for the ending, there'd be no question.

I don't remember much about Return to Horror High besides Marcia Brady running around as a cop, but I'd apply the same logic. If a movie's pretending to be a slasher, it's a slasher.

I've never seen Return to Horror High so I don't know. But I'd say April Fool's Day is a slasher film. It's one big April Fool's joke, because no one has really been killed. But since so many slasher films have a holiday theme, it makes sense that one titled April Fool's Day would be a joke.
