They are notorious, they are disturbing, they are brutal, but are they truly deserving of the label of a video nasty? If you are a movie buff, especially when it comes to the horror and exploitation genres you have definitely heard of the Video Nasties List that came about in the early 1980's.Those movies which were deemed obscene even pornographic. Some may have been deserving. Some of them, I have no idea how they ended up on this list.

I have included in this post the original list of Video Nasties. Now over time, I believe some of these movies were removed from the list, but I have included what I think is the full unedited list with the help of Wikipedia. I have also included all three sections of the Video Nasty List. The amount of movies they went after is INSANE! I highly doubt the people who went after these movies even watched a small portion of them. Perhaps in an act of defiance, those movies ended up wearing the title of Video Nasty as a badge of honor proudly desplaying it on their covers. Fuck the prudes that made that list!

I think I'm going to challenge myself to watch every single movie on listed here. emoticon

FINALLY
Here are three questions for you all:

1. After viewing the list, which movies do you feel in no way whatsoever deserved to be placed on that list? Personally, I've never understood why Axe was.emoticon

2. What movies on the list do you think actually earned the title of a Video Nasty?

3. If there were a Video Nasty List implemented today, what movies do you think would qualify to be on it and why? They can be from any decade.

I've never seen that third list of movies before, I didn't know any of them were ever considered video nasties. There are quite a few on there I've never seen before. From the first two lists, the only ones I have not seen are Human Experiments, I Miss You Hugs and Kisses, and Love Camp 7.

I really don't think any of them deserve to be banned, but there are some that I find really puzzling that anyone would think of banning them. Those would be:

Blood Rites (The Ghastly Ones)
Evilspeak
Forest of Fear (Toxic Zombies)
The House on the Edge of the Park
Madhouse
Night of the Bloody Apes
The Werewolf and the Yeti
Dead and Buried
Death Trap (Eaten Alive)
Don't Look in the Basement
Frozen Scream
The Funhouse
Foxy Brown - WTF?

I've read that the reason Tobe Hooper's The Funhouse, which is incredibly tame, was banned is because it was confused with Last House on Dead End Street, which was called The Funhouse in some markets. The same is probably true for Eaten Alive, which shares its title with an Italian cannibal film.

I don't think any of them should have been banned either. If they were really wanting to ban something, I could understand if it was something that was actually unlawful. Evilspeak is another one that I can't for the life of me figure out what it was that got it on that list.

While I don't think any of them should have been banned, I can understand with titles like Cannibal Holocaust or I Spit on Your Grave. At least those had something that could be considered graphic in them. I truly think these people put movies on that list judging by their titles alone.

I didn't know that about The Funhouse. Pretty cool bit of trivia.

I can see the reason for

The House on the Edge of the Park
Don't Look in the Basement

I assume with foxy brown they were worried that she would inspire an uprising

Back then the censors took a dim view of women being tied up and tortured

(edit) actually I was taslking out my ass, I was confusing this film with
Don't Go in the House (1979)

Yeah, I didn't think I remembered any torture. Maybe it was the 200 year old woman who got her tongue cut out off camera.

House on the Edge of the Park, maybe. It's been over 10 years since I've seen it, but I remember there was some rape, but I don't remember any graphic images. And if I recall correctly, the only people who died were the bad guys.

The censor's tended to come down heavier on rape etc than gore

Axe has gotta be the top of the list of non-nasties. I think I solved the mystery the other night when listening to the blu-ray commentary. Sounds like the synopsis for one particular version described Lisa as a 13 year old, so, I guess a kid being involved in the little violence that actually did happen was what did it. The actress was 22, by the way.

Having The Burning, F-13 1 and 2, Graduation Day, The Prowler, Honeymoon Horror, Prom Night, Happy Birthday To Me, Final Exam or any 80's slasher on this list just makes a joke outta the whole thing.

I remember Absurd/ Monster Hunter having a couple scenes but nothing too extreme.

Blood Feast has gore but nothing really disturbing, much like every HGL gore flick.

Cannibal Apocalypse? No, I don't think so.

I wonder what got Don't Go In The Woods on the list... Dick and Cherry burning to death?

The Cannibal Man might be close but no.

House By The Cemetery would be a NO.

Mardi Gras Massacre shouldn't be on any list for any reason.

Night Of The Bloody Apes has some gore, which looks like stock footage of a heart surgery.

No Zombi 2.

The Beyond is a litlte fucked up but so much more.

Cannibal Terror shouldn't belong to this list any more than the Cannibal genre.

Man From Deep River? I don't think I even knew that was on there. Fuck no!

From what I remember, Don't Look In THe Basement belongs on here less than Axe.

No to Inferno regardless of what the question is...

Same For Let sleeping Corpses Lie.

Don't remember Killer Nun being too fucked up either.

The Toolbox Murders?

Christmas Evil???

Death Weekend?????

Martin???????!

Eaten Alive! was pretty tame, I thought.

Nightbeast was awesome but no.

Headless Eyes was boring but still no.

No to Dawn Of The Dead.

No to Deep Red and A Bay Of Blood.

I don't remember Nightmare City being too out of hand.

No to Snuff but almost.

Pigs? Oasis Of The Zombies? Suspiria? Xtro? Zombie Lake? Blood Song? The Child? Invssion Of The Blood Farmers? The Thing? Mad Doctor On Blood Island? Ugh! NO!

----------------------------------------------

Anthropophagus belongs even though it's only a couple scenes. Very effective scenes, though.

Bloody Moon barely makes it.

Faces Of Death, of course..

Island Of Death has beastiality, incest, gore and piss. so, yes!

I'd Say Last House On The Left is worthy.

Mountain Of The Cannibal God cuz the hog got fucked.

I didn't think The Witch Who Came From The Sea was remotely fucked up, but there is one scene where the main actress thinks back when her father raped her when she was a little girl, which they kinda showed, so, sure. Why not?

Hell of The Living Dead makes it, I guess. Pretty gory and disturbing to some, probably.

Jungle Holocaust cuz the freshly shat out infant got tossed in the river by it's mother for the alligator to eat.

believe it or not, I think Texas Cbainsaw Massacre is worthy cuz it really is dark as fuck and more disturbing than most people give it credit for these days.

Fucking life into gallbladders got Flesh For Frankenstein in, I would imagine.

Yeah, not a big list for those that make it but I haven't seen a bunch of them.

So, a new and improved Video Nasties list, huh?

Mark of The Devil (1970)

Oh, and I'd put John Waters' early films on the list, too. Wonder why they got left off while so many pg flicks made the list. Foolish cunts!

There's so many movies on these lists I haven't seen so it's hard to say. Most of the ones I have seen are nothing compared to what's coming out these days. Martyrs, A Serbian Film, Mermaid in a Manhole, the Vomit Gore Trilogy, Antichrist, Ichi the Killer, Audition, Ebola Syndrome and Grotesque probably make many of these movies seem like comedies. This is a whole different kind of horror and I don't even care to see any of these movies.

From back in the day the most extreme and disturbing ones I remember are Salo and I Spit on Your Grave. And maybe Don't Go in the House. Of course I can't comment on all the ones I haven't seen.

I'm surprised New York Ripper isn't on the lost. Or maybe it is and I'm just not seeing it? It's pretty bloody and lots of sexual themes. I really like this movie though. Two other Fulci ones, Don't Torture a Duckling and Lizard in a Woman's Skin, also have a bunch of things that seem like they'd make the list.

Ebola Syndrome would definitely be worthy of the list. I rewatched it not too long ago.

I haven't actually seen it but I read about it. It's pretty bloody I guess. I figured it would have to be.

So many movies perfect for a challenge emoticon

Well I think others have stated extensively many movies have no place on those lists. Like you said they were made by prudes. emoticon

Of course we all decide for ourselves what we can stomach and not. I would not be a fan of vomiting or porn with fecals.

Completely agree with that! I'm going to challenge myself to watch every one of those on the list. Going to go by the order on the list, so today I'll be starting with Absurd.

This might make for a good monthly challenge, too.

category 1 = 3 pts
category 2 = 2 pts
category 3 = 1 pt
FTV = 1 pt

Since the summer is hot and nasty, it just might work. I could see myself getting into that more than the documentary one this month. For some reason, I just didn't feel like learning shit this month.

A lot of the movies in the third category seem like they're targeted just because their horror movies, and while I think many of those films are not quite fitting of the title "video nasty", it still makes me warm and fuzzy knowing they're on the list.

Fitting titles, IMO:

Blood Feast, Flesh for Frankenstein, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (more implied violence, but still unsettling), Axe (hey... I liked it), Island of Death, Eaten Alive '77, I Spit on Your Grave, Zombi 2, Cannibal Holocaust, Eaten Alive '80, Anthropophagus, The Beyond, Cannibal Ferox, Absurd, The Evil Dead

Fulci sure knew how to use the gore. A lot of 70s and 80s Italian stuff seems to fit the bill, but a lot of other movies on the list are rather tame by today's standards. It's amazing to see how much we get away with today, on much more public platforms like Netflix and whatnot. Almost everything made today would be persecuted if made back then.

I think if a new age Video Nasty list were to come about, it would have stuff like A Serbian Film, Human Centipede, Martyrs, Irreversible, etc. It wouldn't mean the same thing though, as censorship simply isn't a factor for anything anymore, other than MPAA ratings.

You gotta love those old horrors though, because they were pushing boundaries. Some of them are still better than a lot of the horrors that came after, but some are also pretty average.

Same here. Iโ€™m hoping I can find all of them to watch. Something Iโ€™ll probably regret later on.
