I think the implication is that the frogs (toads) are the mastermind behind it all. I have a pretty severe phobia of frogs (and toads) so just them crawling all over me would frighten me to death, too.
I like the film, maybe due in part mostly to nostalgia. I remember catching it on Encore back in the '90s one summer. The greenhouse death was another memorable death scene. Yes, i hate lizards too..
