Herschell Gordon Lewis: Moonshine Mountain (1964)
(there is more I can think of from him)
I love that movie

George Romero - There's Always Vanilla (1971)

Robert Altman - Images (1972) Rarely see it discussed, even among horror fans.

Hal Ashby - The Landlord (1970)

Brian De Palma - Get to Know Your Rabbit (1972)

Images is excellent... I watched it about 5 years ago for the Oct challenge and rated it 9/10. Been trying to find a cheap copy of the dvd ever since. That movie has one of the best uses of sound (despite the title) I've seen in a horror film.

I keep hoping for a Blu Ray release, it would've have been nice if Altman did at least one more horror film. He was good at it, even though not horror The Player has some great dark moments.

In addition to the sound recording (which is often outstanding in Altman's films - pay attention to the soundtrack for O.C. & Stiggs, another one of his obscurities) it has that sparse soundtrack from John Williams which seems completely unlike anything else he has done.

Jeannot Szwarc - Bug (1975)
bar yakko mentioning it on the old imdb hb I have rarely seen this one being discussed. I guess it must be obscure.

never heard of Shanks, beatnik... but I like Castle. Also never heard of that Altman film you mentioned, but Jon Cryer's not real high on my to watch list. emoticon

Haven't seen Shanks in years, but I remember watching it on Commander USA's Groovie Movies back in the 80's.

Two more of the lesser known Castle films, from his "family films" output was The Spirit Is Willing, and Let's Kill Uncle. The Spirit Is Willing is a fun little ghost comedy with Sid Caesar. Haven't seen Let's Kill Uncle in awhile so my memory is fuzzy on it.

Let's Kill Uncle is on my watch list, or I might have already seen it. Memory is fuzzy too. I know I've seen the one with the girls making the crank calls... think that's a diff film though.
Ghost comedies are lower on the food chain for me, so I'll pass on that one. Thanks tho emoticon

Oh be quiet, you know you want to watch Ghost Dad with Bill Cosby.

As a non Jon Cryer fan you might really enjoy OC & Stiggs as he takes a lot of good-natured abuse from the title characters. Plus it has Ray Walston - I'll watch anything with Ray Walston.

I've been thinking about Altman a lot since this post and I realize that most of his output from the 80s and 90s is fairly obscure and almost everything is worth seeing. Some of his late 70s work is obscure too - although many have now come out on DVD (they were never out on VHS). He always hovers in or near my ten favorite directors list.

Shanks is odd. Really odd. I'm not sure if I like it but I will definitely watch it again someday - I've saved a VHS dupe I made - not sure how available it is.

Lol on Shanks. If it's that odd I must seek it out at some point.
Walston is pretty cool. He has one of those instantly recognizable faces...

Don Coscarelli - Jim, the World's Greatest (1976) Don's first film. So far his only film to not get a DVD or Blu release. It's a very well done drama about a young man dealing with his abusive alcoholic father. Angus Scrimm plays the father.

Here's another one from me:

Al Adamson's Carnival Magic (1981) - possibly the most unwholesome children's film ever made. Seedy, degenerate - Hell, very typical of Al Adamson. And it features a monkey in a major role so it will count for Challenge of the Apes next month!

Me too. I originally saw it when we showed it as a midnight movie at the theatre I ran. I thought it would never surface again but eventually it did come out on DVD. I have been on the verge of buying it ever since.
