A lot of the old stories about werewolves, vampires, ghosts, etc, have some kind of supernatural element, obviously. Often, the way to fight the evil monsters lies in some kind of Christian symbol, like a cross, or maybe a pre-Christian symbol that has been co-opted by Christianity, like... OK, nothings coming to mind, but I'm sure we can think of a few kajillion examples.

Anyway, in modern times, there are plenty of horror movies and franchises that have moved away from explicitly Christian ways of fighting the monsters, or they have somehow de-Christianized the Christian symbols... even in the original Fright Night, they do fight Jerry with a cross, but if you watch carefully it's more like the vampire killers have faith in themselves than in Jesus. I don't think they even mention Jesus... Peter Vincent can only fight Jerry with the cross after he has faith in HIMSELF, having succeeded in battle against Evil Ed. It's not really religious at all, it's just a weapon that only has power if you believe in yourself. I think pre-vamped out Evil Ed says to Charlie at one point "You must have total faith in it for it to work," referring to the cross... thats not exactly the same as having faith in yourself, but it's not explicitly about Jesus either.

But, of course, this is a much larger topic than Fright Night. What comes to mind, for examples of modern horror movies that are overtly Christian? I personally think that this could be a pretty disturbing trend, if it started really taking off in a big way, because it could be linked to a broader cultural shift toward a more medieval way of thinking, which, of course, we see all around us, in many ways.

Soooooo anyway, any thoughts on this?
