Anybody catch this one? It's pretty interesting! For a low budget movie, I would say this is quite a respectable effort. The way the brothers interact is especially good. Very very brotherly, pretty much all the time.

I shouldn't say too much about it, or I'll wreck it. I'll put in a link to the wikipedia article about it, but please don't read beyond the first paragraph or so. I'll just say that it made me think of, at different times and in different ways, Believers (2007); Nope; Phantasm, and also Mandy, a little, just because of some of the background imagery; John Dies at the End, for the same reasons as Believers.... and maybe some other movies, who cares. Anyway, it's basically about a cult, or semi-cult-like group of people, and you spend much of the movie trying to figure out exactly what this group of people is all about, and whether they are good or evil.

OK, here's the link. Remember, if you want to really enjoy it, don't read beyond the beginnings of the plot outline. Here, I'll just tell you, if you want to just find it and watch it on your own, all you need to know for googling purposes is that it was produced, directed, and acted in by Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead. I have no idea if Aaron Moorhead is related to Agnes Moorhead. Anyway, here is the wikipedia article.

I really liked Benson and Moorhead's first film Resolution. I see a lot of the same actors are in The Endless too. Sounds like a subplot they had in Resolution. YT free with ads, I'll check it out .

If you liked Resolution, The Endless is an essential viewing. Surprisingly, I don't remember a lot of the specifics about this movie except that I liked it. Probably my least favorite of the duo's 4 main movies though, not counting the recent "Something in the Dirt" I just now found out about.

Only seen Resolution and Spring. I know Spring has it's fans but I didn't love it. Kinda tuned out on them afterwards.

I had that the other day watched Morgan (2016) after watching, I did have suspcisions I had seen parts but going onto IMDB to rate, I find I already had seen it, but zero recollection. Must of been on a flight or something, where normally I just watch 7-8 films back to back and usually just forget about them

Tommix thx for bringing this to light, I somehow missed it. Dude, you need to watch Resolution to fully appreciate and understand The Endless. A lot of things in The Endless that probably didn't seem to make sense are explained earlier in Resolution. It's on Tubi, I recommend you watch it. The Endless is basically Resolution Part 2.

Thanks for the tip.

youtube

Seriously, thanks. I watched it last night. Interesting stuff! I need to mull it over a little. I get the basic idea(s), I'm pretty sure, but I'm gonna try to just think about it for a little bit before I watch the Youtube videos that purport to explain the two movies.

IMO Resolution is 8/10, they were young hungry filmmakers that made a great film for under $30,000 in 2012. Mike Flanagan did the same thing around the same time with Absentia. Then they get signed by big studios and given a big budget and they can't repeat the success. Sometimes especially with horror directors they do more with less cause they're forced to be more creative and don't have a studio dictating what they want. The Endless was a good film, 7/10 but Resolution is superior IMO.

Saw Oculus in cinemas, tbh didn't love it...was given the DVD as a Xmas gift and I think it's still unopened. Need to give it a 2nd chance as I also need to do with Spring. Multiple distractions while watching them may have been the problem at the time. Doctor Sleep and Ouija Origin of Evil weren't bad IMO.

One thought I have about Resolution: the drug addict character keeps saying things like "People come out here in the desert and have all kinds of crazy experiences." My first reaction to that was something like "Yeah, spoken like a true drug addict." My second reaction was to think "WHAT?!? No they don't! It's just a little wilderness park/indian reservation type of place, there's no reason why anyone should have bizarre or inexplicable experiences there.

But the more I think about it, the more I suspect I'm just being a New Englander who hasn't done enough traveling in my life. Apparently lots of people do have pretty bizarre experiences in the great outdoors, in the southwestern US. Possibly because of peyote, mescaline, etc, but it just seems to be part of the culture out there, to head out into the desert and have visions, etc..... there was a Michael Crichton book called Travels, which purported to be nonfiction. In it, he talked about that type of thing, going out in the desert and seeing supernatural lights and auras, having conversations with a cactus, and all kinds of stuff. There's also Carlos Castaneda, of course, if you're willing to include Mexico in your concept of the American southwest... hey, why not.

Anyway, the movie seems to be about storytelling, and how people can get trapped in a story...? Something like that. That certainly makes sense for a story that takes place in southern California, probably within a day's drive of Hollywood. Maybe it's a movie about movies, or at least about horror and sci-fi movies? As you can tell, I am still mulling all this over.

It's a solid psychological horror film that I find has a lot of rewatch value. I believe Resolution succeeded where Cabin in the Woods failed without the bloated budget. You should check out Absentia, it has that Lovecraftian feeling just like Resolution or The Endless.

6/10 from me, I like films that leave the viewer with questions, but for some reason this one bothered me though from memory.

Check out The Territory (1981) similar film (but better)
Actually another german film I watched recent is a bit similar 'the wall' (2012)
