Phenomena (1985)

Aren't there any posts about Phenomena here? We have definitely discussed it, at least the excellent scene toward the end with the impromptu abrupt beheading.

I just wanted to mention something cool about it. The Wikipedia article on it says Argento intended the film to be set in a world in which the Nazis had (perhaps secretly, I think) actually WON WWII. I guess he ended up deciding not to stress that idea too overtly, and instead spent his energy developing the dreamlike atmosphere of the film. But, if you pay attention, you can definitely see very clearly that that idea was in his mind. First of all, click here, scroll down to the section titled Production, and read the little box of text that appears on the right.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phenomena_(film)

Anyway, yeah, if you watch it attentively, I can totally see that that's what he had in mind as he was working on the film. Just look at the headmistress in the school, for one thing. Major Nazi vibes going on there. Bigtime. Also, the school was supposed to be the former home of Richard Wagner, sooooo... yah. Also, the only character who is obviously Jewish does not last long at all, when he shows up (see my comment earlier, concerning abrupt beheadings). This might also apply to Jennifer's roommate at the school, the French girl Sophie, just because she is French. I'm not as sure about that.... also, in the scene in the classroom, the quote they discuss has something to do with remembering the past... if you read the Argento quote in the Wikipedia text box, it makes a lot of sense that he would want to include a discussion somewhere where they talk about memory of the past.

The movie is also completely insane, of course, because of all the bug stuff, and for plenty of other reasons. I like all the shots they have of trees in the dark, at night, with branches blowing in the wind... I have talked about that here before, I think there is something very effective about including shots like that, it just helps set the mood somehow.

Anyway, yeah, I just wanted to share this.

Here I was thinking this was a bizarre murder mystery about a monkey and a bug telepath, but it's actually about the dangers of anti-Semitism! Color me even more baffled by this movie.

It's one of the weirdest movies I know of. Don't forget the suggestion that Jennifer has some kind of split personality disorder thing going on. What's up with that?

Actually, about that: I don't know how aware Dario Argento would have been of the books of Philip K. Dick, but it would have been a very phildickian (yup, that's a word) thing to do to have a character with a split personality somehow existing alternately in the world of the story, and in our own, real world. Maybe Argento intended to do something along those lines with the Jennifer character, at first, but for whatever reason he ended up going in other directions. Likke, maybe Jennifer has dreams of our real world when she sleeps in the Nazified world, and she gradually loses track of which world is the waking world, and which the dreaming world. Something like that. Maybe he had something along those lines in mind.

But yeah, just the bug telepathy and the monkey already make this movie much weirder than it had to be, without these added elements. But hey, if Argento wants to pack more stuff into a movie, good for him.

I believe those discussions you recall were on the HB. I watched this film probably 20 or so years ago...I didn't care for it tbh.

Never heard of this Nazi/alternate history setting. What you pointed out does make sense with that setting in mind though. Argento had a similar idea with Tenebrae. From that movie's Wiki page:

Shot on location in Rome and at Elios Studios, Tenebrae utilized mostly modern-looking locations and sets, allowing Argento to realize his vision that the film reflects a near-future with a diminished population

There's a broader section on that page about the setting too. Apparently the diminished population was due to an atomic bomb blast: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tenebrae_(film)#An_imaginary_city

I always thought this was a pretty decent film, even though it seems to get poor to average reviews. Some have even said it's a low point in Argento's career. I disagree. Argento does incorporate odd and offbeat elements in many of his films, and also often has protaganists with strange abilities or illnesses. This one is no exception, and it does add to the appeal. The bug telepathy thing is farfetched, but it does work in the context of the film. Patau syndrome is also an unusual thing - I don't recall it ever showing up in any other film, and real sufferers of it do have pretty much the same physical characteristics as shown here. I don't think real ones are cannibals or murderers, though.

I would say this isn't quite as brilliant as Tenebre, but it's still pretty entertaining. And it also has Donald Pleasence. I can't think of any role of his where he hasn't been good. I just watched Warrior of the Lost World last night, and even thought it's mostly a total disaster of a film, he is still pretty good in it.
