Fireworks

OK, no sane person would call fireworks a sport, but it's a spectator activity, soooo... well, whatever, just keep reading if you want to read my comment.

I am usually too scared to go out to large public gatherings these days, for various reasons you can easily guess. But, there is a hill near where I live, and from the top of the hill you can watch multiple towns having their foreworks displays, all at once, at this time of year. It's pretty cool.

This year I could see at least eight towns having their fireworks displays, all along the horizon. I'm making it sound better than it is, because trees do block some of the fireworks, and also because the fireworks appear very close to the horizon, at a distance. I think some of the towns whose fireworks I was watching are probably fifteen or twenty miles away. I still think it's pretty cool though... you can see at least some bursts of color all along the horizon, and you can even hear the booms from some of the closer displays.

I say that I could see "at least" eight towns, because in one direction I think I might have been seeing two towns, lined up, one in front of the other. It's hard to tell, at a distance.

The two closest displays, and therefore the most impressive, were Boston's Esplanade fireworks, and also the... um... well, another fairly local display, somewhere in or near Brighton, MA. (That's the same Brighton as the Michael Harvey novel called Brighton, if there are any Michael Harvey fans reading this). I'm not sure exactly which display that was, there have been a few of them scheduled in that area, and sometimes they change their schedules a little, so it's hard to figure out online what the hell I was looking at.

Anyway, I wasn't the only one up there, but luckily there weren't enough people present to attract any mass shooter maniacs. Whew. So, I didn't get shot, and I didn't get Covid, as far as I know, and I got to see a shitload of fireworks. So, all in all, a pretty fun night. Had to share.

I saw a few random bursts in the air as I was on my way to work the past few nights. But to me, if you've seen one sky flower, you've seen 'em all.

I think it's getting ridiculous how many shootings there are for any given occasion now. Why can't there ever be a shooting on a stupid holiday like Star Wars Day? Take out a few of those obsessive weirdos. emoticon I kid! I kid! ... Or do I?

Yeah, OK, that is one of the times when I could sort of understand somebody running completely amok. emoticonemoticonemoticon Actually, now that I'm thinking about this, it is a little surprising that there aren't more mass shootings at big nerd conventions of various kinds. The weirdo factor can be pretty annoying. Not horror conventions, of course (insert nervous laughter here). But, just generally Trekkie or Star Wars or Lord of the Rings types of conventions. I bet there are a lot of close calls every year, but somehow the psycho who is thinking about doing the mass shooting somehow gets talked out of it by people he knows, or maybe recognizes that nerds in general are probablynot the biggest threat to his existence, or his masculinity or whatever the hell he is worried about.... anyway, this reminds me, I might actually go to one of those conventions this August, if I can figure out a way to do it safely. Safely in terms of both avoiding Covid and avoiding mass shooters, that is.

But, getting back to your main point: NERDS!!!!

I never thought about the cons being a place for a rampage. I feel like the people who go there are saner than they get credit for, plus they're paying money just to get in. The security guards are probably trained to spot the difference between a person anxious to meet somebody and a guy who wants to unload on the place. Then again, it gets more confusing when cosplay is factored in. Say some guy dresses up as the Punisher. He seems authentic. Let him in! But then he is unstable and using the costume as a free pass? Fingers crossed that nobody takes those as opportunities to wack any of our beloved famous people.

By the way, while I was waiting for the fireworks to start, I listened to 99 Luftballons on my phone. That doesn't exactly make sense, but somehow it seemed like a good fit to the occasion. Also, of course, we COULD have had a nuclear war while I was listening to it, which would have made the song even more appropriate. As you may have noticed, that did not happen. (PS for comedic effect, after mentioning that we did not have a nuclear war on the 4th of July, either domestic or all of us against Russia, I attempted to find a yarn.io or gif or whatever of WGON station manager Givens, from the 1978 Dawn of the Dead, saying "Damn!" as he does at 4:01 here. I could find no such clip. The world is all the poorer for this... this lack of a clip).
