Serenity (2005)

by Tommix

Oct 2019 *
I just saw this a couple days ago, for the first time in ages. Is anyone here a big fan?? Of either Serenity or the show Firefly? I have never seen Firefly.

I'm asking because it has an intriguing way of presenting some ideas that are probably Libertarian, or... well, at least conservative in a way that I can see the sense in. The Nathan Fillion character has a little soliloquy where he talks about how the people who run society in the world(s) shown in the movie are often coming up with plans and schemes to make people... dramatic pause.... "better." And his character does not hold with such schemes, he doesn't buy them, or, in short, he thinks they're a great big stinking load of Sumatran Rat Monkey shit.

That's actually a pretty interesting point, and the movie makes it in a good way, I think. It is more interesting to watch the movie now then it was when it came out, because all the social media influencers and whatever corporations, hedge fund managers, or countries fund them are all trying to influence us in different ways, all the time. There were similar things happening in the 90s and early 2000s when Serenity was written, God knows, but I think a lot of people would agree that it's far worse now.

Hey, here's the soliloquy I'm talking about:

youtube

Also, the idea that the Reavers were sort of a side effect of all the well-meaning social engineering is interesting, too. They probably would have turned out to be more or less normal people, but they had an extreme reaction to one of the schemes the overlords of society were testing, in their attempt to make people better.... It makes me think of mass shooters, people who might not have been THAT crazy if they weren't subjected to the social pressures of today's world, but who ended up very radicalized and dangerous..

The crew of the spaceship Serenity appear to be some kind of smugglers, and at least one or two of them were veterans of some big war that must have happened in Firefly. They are not upstanding members of society, and that's an important element of the show.

So anyway, it's a pretty interesting movie. If you haven't seen it in awhile, I bet you would find that it has more meaning for you in today's world than it did when it came out. That's what I think, God damn it, and I will die on that hill!!!!!! Well, no, hopefully not, but I feel like I'm on to something here. When it came out, Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Instagram, and comparable social media venues were all a lot smaller, and some of them probably didn't exist at all. We all have our own theories about who is behind various movements that exist on these platforms, and we don't all agree about which of those influencers are the biggest shitheads, but I think we tend to agree that it generally sucks to be subliminally led to think things you might not have thought on your own.

Aaaaanywho.... thoughts?

How can you even talk about Serenity if you haven't seen Firefly? emoticon I'd almost feel offended if I had the capacity to feel such a way.

It's a great sci-fi flick, which I guess can stand on its own, but it would mean a hell of a lot more if you saw the adventures they went through in the show, so you could get all that juicy character development and realize which characters at certain points tried to kill each other and whatnot.

I suppose it has a lot of political commentary, but fortunately it's presented in a radical enough way that it doesn't seem to pertain to any specific modern dilemma. It's mostly just a theoretical scenario in a sci-fi universe, but it has some sci-fi stuff in it.

I always like to compare the crew in this to the crew in Alien Resurrection, which was also a group of space renegades written by Joss Whedon. There are blatant parallels between the two.

Also, it's funny to see a young Glenn Howerton in the beginning, before "It's Always Sunny" became such a hit.

I also think the end fights are awesome. The "villain" was pretty cool. Now go watch the show, you gorram fool!

OK, I should be pretty damned proud of myself for offending the creator of Trash Epics. I mean, jeez. (pats self on back).

No, I just happened to see Serenity because it was on cable once, years ago, and I still haven't gotten around to watching Firefly. I didn't even know what Firefly was.

You can find some discussions of what people think Joss Whedon's political philosophy is, if you google the terms Serenity 2005 Mal libertarian, together with either "make people better" or "I aim to misbehave" .... don't put those first few terms in quotes... you know the drill.

But, my God, I'm wasting time. I have to go watch Firefly.
