I have Hannibal (the movie) playing right now... I am struck by the contrast between the beauty of many shots, especially of Florence, Italy, and the horrifying ugliness of other scenes. Florence is so beautiful... I think I actually get a (very small, but real) attack of Stendhal Syndrome, just watching Hannibal.

Does anyone here have any other movie that comes to mind, in terms of shifting back and forth between great beauty and great ugliness and horror? It could be any kind of beauty, architectural, artistic, natural (sunsets, the Grand Canyon, etc), female... whatever.

Phenomena. Argento had a good eye for beautiful locations with his classics anyway, but I love the exterior used for the school in that movie (actually part of a museum called Rietberg Museum https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rietberg_Museum ). Also worth noting is the Swiss countryside shown in the opening and a few other scenes. In the opening scene, it's cloudy and windy and the tune that plays over it fits perfectly.

I know what you mean. It's hard to explain why it's appealing. Almost calming in a way. I like when it's a little windy in real life though, so maybe that's part of why too.
