Rather enjoyed The Sect (1991) last night. After his fun but blatantly flawed The Church, it shows Michele Soavi on the cusp of greatness. A rather standard, predictable set up in which a young school-teacher is entangled with murderous Satanists with a messy, slightly annoying cap off (though there's a possibility of the very final moments being somewhat inspired if only they were a little clearer) and one of Pino Donaggio's lesser scores. But full of delights too. From the outset, spurts of stylish and grisly violence (more about the artful splash of blood than the brutal impact), and Tomas Arana, Herbert Lom and an array of fellow sectists bringing ample creepiness. And as it gets in gear its imagery becomes vital. Consistently odd and engaging, and consistently popping up, blending readily comprehensible symbolism (bunnies and spirals) with more elusive weirdness (mysterious blue goo) to produce a fine sense of powerful doomy intrigue. Of a malevolent order beyond human agency inexorably asserting itself. The pace rarely flags despite a near two hour run time, and Kelly Curtis (sister of Jamie Lee) is a likeable protagonist. I might rank this third out of Soavi's four old horrors. But its still well worth a watch.

I've dug what I've seen of Soavi's horror. Most familiar with StageFright. This is the only I haven't seen of those four. I see Giovanni Lombardo Radice is in it too. He's always memorable to me.

I'm very fond of Stagefright, and think that even if accidentally, it's one of the most interesting 80's slashers. The way some of the details in it synch up, way its constructed, seems somewhat self aware to me. Dellamorte Dellamore is my fave though. The Sect I believe hasn't had as wide releases as the other three until recently, at least not on DVD. Radice is only in it pretty briefly, alas. Rest of the cast are on point though. I like Radice a lot, especially in Cannibal Ferox and House on the Edge of the Park. I believe in real life he's like a cultured, classy sort, which makes him especially fun in sleaze films to me.

StageFright's my favorite, but since I've seen The Church and Cemetery Man only once each years ago, that could always change. The Sect's definitely not a movie I've seen talked about before. Not sure I've ever even looked at its IMDb page before today. I love Radice in Cannibal Ferox. He's a total asshole in it and it's great.

I like Cemetary Man the best, but it definitely took me two or three watches to fully appreciate how it works. I've got a particular taste for that kind of mind warping, philosophically inclined stuff. Otherwise Stagefright comes second. Apparently Radice hates Cannibal Ferox and Umberto Lenzi. Think the animal killing was the big point of contention. He assholed it up like a total champ though. Very fun film.

Still haven't seen this one yet, though I intend to at some point in this life... I liked the Church okay, but have enjoyed some of Soavi's other films more, so good to hear this one basically represents.

I really like the crazy shenanigans and some of the camera-work in The Church but the construction is really off and several of the demon fodder are just plain annoying. The Sect isn't as flamboyant, but is much better controlled and so more satisfying all round I think.

Hopefully it can come out from their shadow a bit.

Love all four from Soavi and would love to have this one on disc. I've seen it twice, once without translation , both times on Youtube. The Church is my favorite of the quartet desspite the story becoming a complete mess.

It's weird that Blue Underground or Code Red never picked it up, seems like it should have been a no brainer for them. Maybe some rights complications I suppose. The UK release from Shameless is pretty quality, longest length available apparently, looks and sounds nice, has English and Italian language. I watched it in Italian with subs but will probably henceforth watch the English version. Worth picking up if you have a multi region player.

I think it's a music rights issue. As I remember it starts out with A Horse With No Name.

Ah, that it does. The song's appearance in the Shameless release happily suggests that something has been sorted out now though.

I'm a fan of The Church, hell I tend to like his movies in general. The Sect is the one I haven't seen, but I'll be adding it to my watch list.

Real shame he only made four horrors. I think he could have eclipsed Argento if he'd kept at it.
