Don't think I've seen enough that I really liked to give a Top 10 (i.e. watched multiple times), although Eyes Without a Face, Diabolique and Martyrs would all be in there. Possession is another although possible, although it really
needs a rewatch. I also liked Climax (2018) quite a bit.

Think Calvaire is a Belgian movie...

Yes you're right, I'll change my list. Climax was decent likie all gaspers films, IIRC the kid would be scarred during the filming

You're right, Noรฉ's films are all decent. I see others have put Irreversible on their list although I don't personally regard it as a horror movie so wouldn't include it.

I haven't seen much outside of that brief wave of "extreme" French horrors of 2000s. I didn't really like any of those. In fact, I thought they were pretty terrible. People rave about Inside and Martyrs and (not so much) Frontiers, but I thought they were all garbage. Less than captivating attempts at juxtaposing art and extreme violence. Beyond that, I'll try to think any French horrors I know of.

High Tension - Despite what I just said, this movie is artsy and violent, but I love that dreamlike mood. The context of the whole twist ending nullifies any previously perceived "tension", but I was pretty obsessed about this movie for a minute there.

Like you said, Diabolique was good. A classy old school movie with a touch of the unsettling.

Shiver of the Vampires - The first Jean Rollin movie I saw, but it sets a high standard. A hippy, Hammer-esque, and most importantly, sexy movie. Fortunately, I mostly remember liking the movie, which means a rewatch should yield a fun experience.

Irreversible was good. Mostly in the reverse narrative technique, but still disturbing enough.

I've exhausted the well. I definitely want to see more Jean Rollin movies, I know that much.

part of why Diaboliqueis good (though I may be wrong) but wasnt this the first time *that* (now a trope) twist was used

Inside
Martyrs
Irreversible
Don't Deliver Us From Evil
Diabolique
Eyes Without a Face
Amer

Yeah nah mate, aint there like 5 rollin films amd 3 rollinesk films there, not that thats bad at all mine. I do think rollin is good, The Shiver of the Vampires, Lips of Blood and Fascination would make my top 20.
Actually the country has a particular feel with its art, these films look like their late romantic paintings (renoir, degas) or feel like the french composers (satie, delibes, faure, debussey)

I feel like there might be 2 or 3 modern ones I can't think of, so, there might be a little Rollin filler in there.

Not a big fan of snails, they are ok. My gfs brother is always torturing snails for feeding on. Before you eat them you have to starve them by. Frogs I've had often. You know how everything tastes like chicken, well this does. Lots of bones

Remember as a little kid maybe 5 or 6 my pops and grandfather conning me into trying frogs legs without telling me what they were...it wasn't bad but I didn't want to eat anymore after telling me what it was. I remember them laughing their asses off at the time. Never tried the escargot.

Best I can do is a top 8. I've seen Malรฉfique, but not in a long time. Never seen Martyrs, but since it's been listed a few times already, I'll put it on my watchlist.

Diabolique
Eyes Without a Face
Requiem for a Vampire
The Grapes of Death
Fascination
The Living Dead Girl
Baby Blood
High Tension

Late to the party and most are already mentioned. Like Markus there's a lot of films I saw once years ago and need to be rewatched. Like Znep, I'm not the biggest fan but here it goes...

Diabolique
Eyes Without a Face
High Tension
Inside (should've rewatched for the Xmas challenge)
Irreversible
Martyrs
