60's horror

Sep '18 *
I don't think we discuss the 60's horror movies very often here so I thought I would go ahead and discuss it...

So what are your favorite horror movies from the 60s?

What makes the 1960s such an interesting decade for horror films is thatโ€”without any build-up or warning from the previous decadeโ€”the genre started off so good in 1960 in Eyes Without a Face, Psycho, Peeping Tom and Black Sunday to name a few - that it was too much for most audiences. The more well-known directors made psychological horrors and the Italians and the low-budget exploitation American films made the more bloody efforts.

This is a list of the best horror films that I have seen (rated 7 or higher) from each year of the 60's:

1960 - Pretty solid year for horror.
Psycho
Peeping Tom
Village of the Damned
Eyes Without a Face
The City of the Dead
Mill of the Stone Women
House of Usher
The Flesh and the Fiends
Black Sunday

1961
The Innocents
Pit and the Pendulum
Scream of Fear

1962
What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?
Carnival of Souls
Night of the Eagle
Premature Burial

1963
Il demonio
The Haunting
The Birds
Blood Feast
X: The Man with the X-Ray Eyes
The Sadist
The Whip and the Body
Black Sabbath
The Ghost
Diary of a Madman
The Kiss of the Vampire
The Day of the Triffids

1964
Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte
The Last Man on Earth
Castle of Blood
Nightmare
The Flesh Eaters
The Gorgon
The Tomb of Ligeia
Children of the Damned

1965
Repulsion
Planet of the Vampires
The Nanny
The Skull
Dr. Terror's House of Horrors

1966
Kill, Baby... Kill!
Eye of the Devil
Incubus
Queen of Blood
The Witch
The Reptile
The Plague of the Zombies
Dracula: Prince of Darkness
An Angel for Satan
The Witches
Island of Terror

1967
Viy (1967)
Wait Until Dark
Spider Baby
Torture Garden
The Mummy's Shroud

1968
Rosemary's Baby
Night of the Living Dead
Hour of the Wolf
A Quiet Place in the Country
Witchfinder General
Even the Wind Is afraid

1969 - oddly enough possibly my least seen year of the decade.
What Ever Happened to Aunt Alice?
Fear No Evil
Daughter of the Mind

There are other horror movies I still want to see (possibly October) from the decade namely:

Blind Beast (1969)
Paranoiac (1963)
The Shuttered Room (1967)
The Book of Stone (1969)
The Time Machine (1960)
The Night Walker (1964)
The Oblong Box (1969)
Blood and Roses (1960)
Nightmare Castle (1965)
Homicidal (1961)
The Haunted Palace (1963)

What about you what are some of your favorites from the 60's?

Nice list..

There was a lot of originality from that decade. Giallo genre developed in the mid-to-late 1960s. Splatter really came into its own as a distinct subgenre of horror in the early 1960s too with the films of Herschell Gordon Lewis. Psycho is considered to be the first film in the slasher genre. So there was a lot of creativity from the 60s.

I forgot to include The Sadist.... good film..

I wanted to watch The Raven (1963) by Roger Corman - but that one seems it is more comedy than anything. A shame really cause I like Edgar Allan Poe stories.

Make sure you watch Eyes Without A Face for the subtitled challenge. I think you'll enjoy that one.

I'm not thrilled with most of the decade, but some of these movies knew how to do it right. Hitchcock, Polanski, Romero, Vincent Price, Hammer... there was some gold in this era.

I think Paranoiac was an interesting Psycho rip-off with Oliver Reed playing a mad drunk. Let us know your thoughts.

Oliver Reed playing a mad drunk.

That is art imitating life right there..

Reed was the worst drunk you will ever see..

Here he is drunk and disruptive during a TV interview..

The Curse of the Doll People is suppose to be good. I have that for October. We have a lot of the same movies on both lists. The 60's seems to be a pretty underrated decade on T.E. The more I see from the 60's the more I like. I seen The Time Machine (1960) last night - it was very good. You don't seem to have a lot of Hammer Horror on your list, Johan? Are you not a fan?

I really want to like the Hammer movies but every time again they disappoint me. The atmosphere, setting and costumes is all good but I'm not really a fan of the rather slow pacing and the rather theatrical performances. Also they rely a bit too much on Lee and Cushing, they are great actors yes but I'm no fan. They really don't have the same effect on me as Vincent Price, Bette Davis, Boris Karlof or even Bela Lugosi has on me. I'm not a fan of the evil Frankenstein type and Dracula I really found underwhelming. Also they use such beautiful women but usually don't get further than damsel in distress roles. Maybe it was a British thing but Hammer really lacks some good female roles or performances. It's not there wasn't any talent out there looking at plenty of movies from the time with good female roles. Hammer often is too much boys club for me. It's nice they had the right atmosphere and style but even for the 60s they were quite old-fashioned, the subtle approach can work but to me it feels they never reached the potential they had . But it's also my personal preference of course.

For October, the only '60s movies I'm planning to watch are Paranoiac and Spider Baby. However, there are quite a few others listed in this thread I'd like to see. Might have to squeeze some of them in.

That is a pretty solid list of 60s horror, Ballz. Another fan of The Raven. I am really considering watching it, but the comey tag keeps putting me off. Would you recommend it?

Sure, I recommend it. It's a very loose adaptation, but I've enjoyed all of Roger Corman's Poe movies that I've seen so far. I noticed you didn't list The Masque of the Red Death. Didn't like it or haven't seen it? If you haven't seen it, I recommend it as well. That's my favorite of those Corman/Poe movies.

I wasn't overly impressed by it. I seen it a few months ago on my local Horror TV Channel, and it didn't woo me. I really wanted to like it 'cause Vincent Price is the king but for whatever reason it didn't. I might re-visit it to see has my opinion changed.

The Corman - Poe partnership is marvellous. I have seen five of them so far. They go something like this:

Pit and the Pendulum (1961) 8
House of Usher (1960) 7
Premature Burial (1962) 7
The Tomb of Ligeia (1964) 6
The Masque of the Red Death (1964) 5

You might like The Haunted Palace, directed by Corman, loosely based on a Lovecraft story and staring Vinny Price.
