Is anyone else getting stoked for October yet? Does anyone have an idea of what they what to watch? Do you have anything saved for it?

I know there is still three weeks to be exact to the kick-off of The October Challenge, and I know that there is a challenge underway, but I am starting to look forward to this years challenge. Time flies and it waits for no man. However, it is not just the challenge - I like this time of year, when the evenings are shorter. Leaves are falling and Autumn is calling. It is good for TrashEpics too, a sharp increase in activity is inevitable - hopefully activity will be prolonged.

Anyway, I usually put movies aside especially for it. Movies that I haven't had a chance to watch, or movies that I keep putting off, for one reason or another. I already know what I will be watching this year as it saves from rushed choices and ultimate disappointment. I have a nice mixture of old and new movies, from foreign, to obscure and hyped horror lined up. It allows gives me the opportunity to explore some directors filmography that I may have not seen to others in which I am concluding their filmography, to watching some Asian horror movies I have not seen before. I usually don't bother with re-watches - I usually just watch first-time-views instead. Anyway here is my list for anyone interested:

The weather has been getting a lot better already. We're getting out of that summer heat and into a rainier, chilly vibe that brings about all the right feelings. Stores got their Halloween decorations, and I'll probably be decorating the house this year. Been living in an apartment for the last few years, so dressing the place up hasn't been an option. Now, I live in a nice suburban neighborhood, and I have nephews that I can impose the traditions on, so it should be a lot of fun.

I've only got a handful of titles in mind to watch, and I also like to put emphasis on first-time viewings. As much as I've seen, there's still so much stuff I haven't seen. I tend to go with the flow of whatever's streaming or whatever new releases come out, and mostly whatever is discussed on this site, of course.

I've said this before, and I'll say it again. I'm all up for any ideas on how to make this year's challenge and environment as good as it can be. Easter eggs, color schemes, whatever.

You can feel the chill in the air here. We had an unusually hot summer this year, so it is nice to get back to normality. That is nice that you can impose the traditions on your nephews. You will see Halloween decorations around the shops, but it is not what it is like in America. It is considered much more of a holiday over there. It is a shame really.

There may be some good horror movies on TV. I hope anyway - you would think there would be for the season that is in it.

There will be a lot of users who haven't been very active the last year returning. Hopefully, we will find a way for those to stick around. Maybe, it is just me but I have found the last few days there has been a more relaxed atmosphere here.

Though the weather feels autumn-ish here today, it won't last. Supposed to go back to summer weather tomorrow and remain that way until at least the middle of next week. emoticon

I have most of my viewings for the October Challenge decided on and in my possession. Usually I do both rewatches and FTVs. This year, I'd like to stick to only FTVs. It'll be the first time in a long time that I don't watch stuff like Halloween and Trick 'r Treat.

Here's my list. It's 57 movies. I'd like to bump it up to 62 for 2 movies a day. I've got some old, some new, and some foreign, along with some sequels I've been meaning to watch for a while now.

Arachnophobia (1990)

The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms (1953)
The Brood (1979)
Bug (2006)

I dislike the really hot weather. I like the sun as much as the next guy, but not when you are melting in it. I wasn't built for the really hot weather. Hopefully, that Autumn chill will arrive shortly for you.

I like to plan, Ballz. It saves the last minute rush on what to watch.

That would be a nice goal to reach.

You have a diverse list of titles.

I really enjoyed:

The Brood (1979)
Cat People (1942)
Cat People (1982)
The Changeling (1980)
Dead of Night (1945)
Diabolique (1955)
Freaks (1932)
Ghost Story (1981)
Hellraiser: Hellseeker (2002)
The Incredible Melting Man (1977)
The Keep (1983)
Messiah of Evil (1973)
Pin (1988)
Race with the Devil (1975)
Resolution (2012)
The Sect (1991)

There are some there that I have seen an yet to see. I need to watch:

Bug (2006)
The Cell (2000)
Effects (1980)
Happy Death Day (2017)
Hellraiser: Revelations (2011)
Hellraiser: Judgment (2018)
It Came from Outer Space (1953)
The Living Dead Girl (1982)
Paranoiac (1963)
A Quiet Place (2018)
Requiem for a Vampire (1971)
Sssssss (1973)
Them! (1954)

Hopefully, I may watch a few of these before the challenge starts.

Definitely some essential Asian movies on there. Hope you manage to prioritise some of those, particularly The Eye, Dark Water (I still haven't watched my new Blu-ray so will be one of mine!), Pulse and Shutter. Not so keen on Versus but I think ebo likes it. I haven't seen the original TV version of Ringu.

Good to see a few "extreme" movies on there too. Angst is probably the best of those lot, followed by Martyrs. Wasn't a huge fan of Inside but many like it, and I think A Serbian Film is underrated. It's a pretty good movie. I can't remember much of Man Bites Dog but worth a watch I think.

I will struggle to watch 31 movies and it will be a mix of FTVs and re-watches. I have a rough idea of what I want to watch and I might join the Shudder 1 week free trial and grab a few from there.

Oh, I most definitely will. Since I am pretty confident that I will like them - I have ordered The Eye Trilogy (by Tartan Video), Dark Water, and Shutter. So they should arrive well in time for the challenge. I have Pulse on hard-drive.

I have hear a lot of good things about the TV version of Ringu. A lot of people who have seen it seem to love it. It only has 187 votes on IMDb. So it is intriguing.

Yeah, I haven't seen a lot of these foreign extreme horrors. I figure that October is a perfect time to. I own them all on DVD so I will be watching them early in the challenge.

I was just looking to see what movies Shudder has. They have a pretty decent selection. I remember a month or so ago, The Horror Channel ran a night dedicated to Shudder. They showed It Stains the Sands Red 2016 among others. They have a few Asian movies, but I am holing out for the challenge to see them. Of what they have, these movies interested me the most that I have not seen:

Amer (2009)
Baby Blood (1990)
Apartment 143 (2011)
Blue Sunshine (1977)
Death Walks at Midnight (1972)
Digging Up the Marrow (2014)
Hell House LLC (2015)
I Sell the Dead (2008)
Jug Face (2013)

I think you have the right approach to it, Markus. I mean it is suppose to be a bit of fun. It is not fun when you are watching over a hundred...emoticon

Dark Water and The Eye trilogy are all on Shudder emoticon but that's cool you are owning them. i'm guessing you've already seen Audition and they have 3 Extremes and Thirst on there which are other Asian horrors worth a watch if you also join up for a week. Yeah it is a decent selection but not enough to warrant a monthly subscription.. from what I can tell, they hardly add anything so to say it's the "fastest growing" is a bit of bull.

There used to an extreme challenge on the Horror Board, I was runner up one time. I forced myself through stuff like August Underground. That was one memorably messed up Christmas period emoticon. Thanks to all the recs from Shaza.. pity she's not around anymore.

Yeah, I know... emoticon

Here is the Asian horrors I have seen. Ranked and rated:

Tetsuo, the Iron Man (1989) 9
Ju-on: The Grudge (2002) 8
Audition (1999) 8
Ringu (1998) 8
Thirst (2009) 8
Noroi: The Curse (2005) 7
Three... Extremes (2004) 7
A Tale of Two Sisters (2003) 7
Ringu 0 (2000) 7

As you can see I haven't seen many Asian horror (I have seen more non-horror movies such movies from Yasujirล Ozu, Akira Kurosawa, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Kar-Wai Wong, Chan-wook Park among others) but for the most part I liked what I seen. I still want to see the obvious ones like Dark Water, The Eye 1 &2, Pulse and Shutter.

I would say that was one fucked up Christmas emoticon Yes, I remember Shaza, it is such a shame her and others have left us. I don't know how we can get them back..

My ratings for those movies, just for curiousity's sake:

Audition (1999) 9
A Tale of Two Sisters (2003) 9
Ringu (1998) 8
Noroi: The Curse (2005) 8
Ju-on: The Grudge (2002) 7
Three... Extremes (2004) 7
Tetsuo, the Iron Man (1989) 7
Thirst (2009) 7
Ringu 0 (2000) 6

I thought Ju-on: The Grudge 2 was scarier than the first. Worth seeking out. A more recent, really enjoyable and very scary horror is Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum (2018). Not exactly original but the scares were done very well and effectively.

Do also try and seek out Cure (1997), ebo's favourite Japanese horror. For something a bit more messed up, try some of Sion Sono's movies like Strange Circus (2005).

Lastly but not least, if you haven't already seen them, seek out some older horror such as Onibaba (1964), Kwaidan (1964), Kuroneko (1968) and Hausu (1977).

I aim to do a foreign language cinema challenge in December (to try and get Troma to watch more subtitled films emoticon).. maybe save some for then if you fancy competing.

Thanks for the recs. I just ordered Ju-on: The Grudge 2. I look forward to it. Yes, when I was looking through some Asian horror movie lists - Cure (1997) kept popping up as a must see.

I was actually looking through what Asian horror I have on my external hard-drive and DVD collection (I have a couple of thousand movies so it is hard to remember) yesterday and I also have these. I have no recollection of buying or downloaing any of these emoticon

Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (2000)
Noriko's Dinner Table (2005)
Ichi the Killer (2001)
Strange Circus (2005)
Gozu (2003)
Visitor Q (2001)
Suicide Club (2001)
Naked Blood: Megyaku (1996)
Infection (2004)
Ringu 2 (1999)
Shogun's Sadism (1976)
Grotesque (2009)
The Manster (1959)
Red Room (1999 Video)
The Guinea Pig movies on hard-drive (although I have seen a lot of them.)
I Saw the Devil (2010)

Yes, I will have to watch Onibaba (1964), Kwaidan (1964), Kuroneko (1968) and Hausu (1977). I might save those and the above-mentioned for your challenge.

(to try and get Troma to watch more subtitled films emoticon)

emoticon I look forward to the challenge. It will be nice to watch all these acclaimed foregin horror movies aroun Christmas.

I saw a lot of those movies for that extreme challenge emoticon. You should definitely prioritise watching I Saw the Devil, Strange Circus and Ichi the Killer. The rest are a bit hit and miss for me.. nothing essential on there unless you are just after some extreme gore (Naked Blood has some of the most impressive practical f/x you will see in horror).

That is a nice list of re-watches an FTVs. I have seen a few of those. I liked:

Mill of the Stone Women (1960)
The Crazies (1973)
The witch who Came from the Sea (1976)
The Stuff (1985)
Demons 2 (1986)

House on Haunted Hill (1959)
Zombie Flesh Eaters (1979)
The House by the Cemetery (1981)
Burial Ground (1981)
Death smiles on a Murderer (1973)

I want to watch some of the old ones like:

Mr. Sardonicus (1961)
Homicidal (1961)
The Night Walker (1964)
The Tingler (1959)

Recently, I have been in the mood for films from that era like Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte (1964), What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962), Nightmare (1964), Castle of Blood (1964), The Oblong Box (1969), Premature Burial (1962) and Eye of the Devil (1966) which were all great imo.

All of them are from master of gimmicks William Castle. Even though he is mostly remembered for those gimmicks so a very good marketeer, I think he was a very competent filmmaker in his days.

The good thing about movies from these periods is that they set a certain mood, an atmosphere that seems to have lost once we got into the 70s. Okay that's just my feeling and I do love black and white cinematography certainly on gothic time pieces.

I know what you mean. Movies from that time relied more on atmosphere and story-telling - they weren't soley about gore or nudity.

I was going to watch William Castle's 13 Ghosts (1960) but it seems more on the comedy side. Would that be correct?

I was also going to watch The Raven (1963) by Roger Corman - but that one seems it is more comedcy than anything. A shame really cause I like Edgar Allan Poe stories.

I have seen it only once and without the special glasses. I did buy the DVD version which includes those glasses (tested and it works). I know the movie is more about this gimmick than anything else as the story is not much to shout about. Not really scary but I would disagree that it relies more on comedy. When I re-watch it this time with the glasses I'll be able to give a more proper judgment.

I was also going to watch The Raven (1963) by Roger Corman - but that one seems it is more comedcy than anything. A shame really cause I like Edgar Allan Poe stories.

That's what I found a shame as well. I have seen all 7 of Corman's Poe adaptations starring Price and I thought The Raven was easily the weakest because it is more comedy. It's nice to see Price, Karlof, Peter Lorre and a young Jack Nicholson all in the same movie but comedy I consider a waste of their talent given the name and fame they made in the horror business. If there is one I suggest avoiding it's that one. I think I have seen all of Corman's horror and even though he made some other abysmal ones, I can't think of one worse than The Raven. I recommend The Raven (1935) with Karlof and Lugosi a 100 times above the one from 1963.

Btw I think The Tingler is fucking brilliant, the concept alone.

It doesn't excite me at all. I never did anything different in October than any other month. I hate the cold weather coming, and I hated being in school. I really hate everything about winter - holidays, football, time change, etc. Halloween could be fun but I never had friends so I never really did anything. And my parents hated horror movies so it was just like any other day for most of my life.

Once I was in college I could at least watch movies. But I can watch movies any time of the year.
