Abel Ferrara

Jul '17
I love this guy's work. I hate to to use the clichรฉd phrase, but I feel he is a tad underrated. I really like how his films have remarkable, gritty quality to them. The characters in his films, tend to be, for the most part, caught up in self-destructive patterns. He often collaborates with screenwriter Nicholas St.John, who is also very good IMO.

Anyway, instead of listing some of my favorites (because I kinda like all of his movies) I thought I would just rank them:

The Addiction
The Funeral
Bad Lieutenant
China Girl
King of New York
Body Snatchers
The Driller Killer
Ms .45

There are a fair few more I have to see yet.

Do you like his movies? What are you favorite(s) ?

Quirky, independent, gritty, and not afraid of going over the top - what's not to like about Ferrera's films? He fell off my frequently watched list in the mid-nineties and I haven't revisited many of his earlier works since then but here's how I would rank them:

Best (rating: 9)
King of New York - also a favorite performance from Walken

Rating: 8
The Bad Lieutenant - and a favorite performance from Keitel

Rating: 7 (I like all of these about equally but I've tried to put them in order starting with the best - all very watchable, exciting takes on genre...)
Driller Killer
Ms. 45
Fear City
Crime Story (pilot for TV series)
Body Snatchers
China Girl

Rating: 6 (somewhat more flawed but still entertaining)
The Addiction (this is the one I most feel the need to revisit because I've always been less impressed than most people)
Cat Chaser (hard to go wrong with an Elmore Leonard novel and a cast like this has)

Rating: 5
Dangerous Game - I don't remember any details of this one but I rated it a 5 on IMDb.
